SM465 Swap

Okay, so its time to get ready to do my tranny swap and i have a few questions that need some answers....

1. Will the flywheel off of my 1978 SBC fit on the newer engine in my truck?

2. Will i be able to use the cross member that came with my 205 or will i need a different one?

3. What will i need to bypass the neutral safety switch?

4. Is there any tips or hints that anybody can provide that has a;ready done this swap?

Once again, thanks in advance for the help.

The flywheel changed in 87' so a flywheel off a 78' should fit your 84'..
The crossmember should fit..
The safety switch is whether you want it or not..

Okay, thanks for the anwers.

The problem with the flywheel is that i dont know what the engine that is in it now is out of. The guy told us that he thought is was out of a 96 chevy pickup but i dont know how to tell.

The reason i asked about the cross member is that i read somewhere that you need to either create a new crossmember or get one from a 203 because the stock 205 crossmember on a 1 ton truck makes the tcase sit up to high.Is this true?

Not completly positive on the crossmember, I would think it would fit.
But the the flywheel, with the older sbc the bolt pattern and inner circle where larger. With the introduction of TBI they changed to a tighter pattern and a smaller hole. My jeep has a 70's motor but the clutch components are from an 80's part descriptions..

The engine dosent have a tbi set up on it so i guess the only way to find out what years it is is to look when i pull the tranny to do the swap?

You should be able to just jump the safety switch with a butt connector. I can't remember which wire it is on an automatic column but it had to be done to mine at one time before we went with a PSC shaft and tilt column.

Found out that the engine in my truck is a 350 2bolt with the casting number 3970014 so its a 70 to 76 engine. So im good on the fly wheel.

Did some reading and i have a question. Is it true that the thickness of a 3/4ton frame and a 1/2 ton frame are the same? If they are i think the crossmember i have will work.

The only frames that are a different thickness are the 1 tons and the diesels. The 1/2t and 3/4t stuff are the same.

Can anyone tell me what i need to do to hook up my reverse lights on my sm465? Ive been trying to figure it out but when it comes to wiring i suck. I can only find one place to hook up anything on the electrical so im guessing its the reverse lights? Or is it the nuetral safety switch? The truck had a 700r4 before i did the swap if that makes a difference.

The 465 should only have one electrical plug and that will be your reverse lights.

The neutral safety switch is connected to the clutch pedal that pulls/pushes a slide switch when you push in the clutch. On a chevy it's usually a thick purple and yellow wire under the dash that has a black spade plug.

Correct - the yellow wire goes from the column to the NSS and the purple goes from the NSS to the starter, so you can either run them to the clutch switch now, or splice them together if you don't care about it being able to start while in gear

If the wires are connected to the neutral safety switch, and you depress the clutch pedal, the truck will start.

If the wires are connected to the NSS, and you don't depress the clutch, the truck won't start.

If you bridge the wires or splice them together, the truck will start.

If you leave the wires alone, doing nothing, the truck will not start.

I would highly recommend a haynes or chilton book, or both, if you don't already have one for your truck.

They come in handy for wiring diagrams and hunting down other problems you may encounter later. I have both for my truck, jeep, etc.

I just made a jumper on my jeep to bypass the N/S switch. Just make sure you double check that it is in neutral before starting it if you are parked close to anything you don't want to hit. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for the help guys. Got it running last night. Since it was a factory automatic the purple and yellow wires were already jumped together. We were having a problem with it firing. The wire from alternator to the distributor had gotten knocked out. Plugged it in fired right up. I have some pictures that i will post up later. Still have a few questions on the reverse lights.

The reverse light switch comes off of the trans with two wires. It is just a ball switch that completes the circuit when you shift into R and the ball gets grounded out.

By ball switch I mean if you unscrew it it has a little ball bearing in it, that's all.

Alright, so here is what i found under the dash.

This seems to be the reverse light switch for the automatic. It was attached to the top of the steering column close the the firewall. Can i just run wires from the switch to the transmission?

Are these the neutral safety switch wires? If you look at the end there is a little piece of brass that plugs both holes to complete the circuit.

And finally, is this the neutral safety switch? If it is then how is it supposed to be mounted?

If this is for a trail rig, I highly recomend taking the NSS out so you can start it without having the clutch pressed.
