1985 Dodge Crew Cab Expedition-Dual Purpose Rig.

My good friend is on his way to pick up my latest project today in MO. It's a 1985 Dodge crew cab 1 ton srw 4x4 short bed with a drivetrain already transplanted from a 1992 Dodge cummins w250.

I debated wether to buy a brand new dodge, turn in company truck, buy a 06-07 Dodge with the 5.9L or buy an older Dodge cummins that I could pay cash for and not have the 500.00+ note starring at me for the next 4-5 years. So as you can tell I went with the older Dodge and got lucky with finding one that is a crew cab to boot, enough room to haul the family around!!!

Plans are to get a fresh coat of paint on it, re do the interior, upgrade the suspension front and rear with Deaver or Alcan springs and slap on some 35s or 37s on some new wheels. It also needs a rebuild on the transmission so I will deal with that after the paint is done.

The first part of getting it painted will take some time as I plan on letting a restoration shop here locally handle all the paint and body work, so I'm sure it will be there for the next 6+ months.

Here are some pics.

Only down side is the auto trans. Does it have A/C?

Automatic transmissions are gay.

Well since the auto is already torn up you can get it built by someone good that knows what it takes to handle the Cummins. Good lookin ride. Nothing like not having a truck note! If it were me I would get the tranny fixed them save some more dough and get it painted. I would NEVER put 37" tires on a dang thing again.....for a DD anyway. Not even for an occasional driver. You can kiss towing anything goodbye. Trust me, just went thru that. I would do 35" at the most and try to keep it as low as possible. Or put dually hubs on front and some fenders on rear and run some 22.5's on that sucker! That would be awesome.

I prefer a manual to but I think I'm going to stick with the auto and have it built with all the good stuff to handle at least 400hp. Thinking twins would be cool.

Yes it has A/C and according to the seller it even works, will see.

I would do the tranny first but with all that surface rust I really want the body and paint work done ASAP!

This has crossed my mind more than once, but finding the rear dually fenders in good shape can be a challenge. Would probably just stick with some 17" dually rims though as the 22.5s ride so damn rough.

More than likely as soon as I get it done then drive it around the block.

The tranny must not be in too bad of shape, my buddy said the seller drove it 20+ miles to meet up with him and it drove on the trailer with no problems. May just be low on fluid or the t/c may be going bad.

I don't plan to lift it much for the 37s. I will do the lift very similar to the M880 I built a few years ago. It was pretty low and it had 37s.

Oh I had plenty of power......read 5.9 Cummins. But that truck (brand new) walked all over the road, had vibrations, etc. I would never do it again. 35's is as big as I'd go. Kinda gets hard to find a good load rating in a 37 too.

New plan of attack.

New plan is to rebuild the front dana 60 from end to end (swap in internal style locking bearing hubs), upgrade the front suspension with Deaver 4" leaf springs with 2" drop hanger up front and Jungle (he sells his stuff over on RCC) HD frame bushing mount on front rear hanger along with 2" longer shackles. Offroad Design cross over steering with HD tie rod and drag link. Then the rear will get a set of Deaver 64" long 6" leaf springs and swap that rear Dana 60 axle out for one from a 2007 Ram 2500, it's an AAM 11.5" (more beef). This should take me at least a couple of months, maybe more depending on the weather. Then I will tear into the tranny and see what is going on with it.

I start ordering parts next week!
