Back in the game 1995 YJ

So after a couple years away from the scene for the most part, I finally snuck back in. Picked up this gem in June from a friend of mine down here in Corpus. It's a 95 YJ 2.5L/AX5/231 SYE Waggy 44's front and rear with 5.38's and spools. Had a new set of 35" BFG AT's on it, SOA with YJ's up front and Yota rears out back. Full cage, armored, autometer gauges. This rig was build from stock in 04-05 roughly, and was a DD for about 5 years, since then it became a weekend rig/beach rig/garage ornament. It ran and drove, and I drove it home, but it needed some attention.

First off it had an issue starting, sometimes it wouldnt fire off. Turns out it was a bad capacitor in the PCM, fixed that and was set. Next, the wiring behind the dash had some issues from the jeep being in the weather so much, so I had to rip the dash out and rewire all of that. After that, all new brakes all around including booster/MC, and new axle seals in the front axle. Went ahead and slapped chromo's in there while I was there. Did some minor cage mods, slapped on a set of 37" Krawlers and was ready to play.

Headed to Trees for labor day, by 10:30 Saturday morning we were loaded back up and headed home. The clutch didnt last, it was slipping like crazy on the first climb (Hangover Hill). Before giving up managed to chunk the rear driveshaft due to a previosly broken yoke (I overlooked this). Also bent up the rear leafs as well.

Prior to the trip, the next round of mods was already in the works. Plans are to slap a 14 bolt in the rear with C&C hubs making it 63.5" WMS, and convert the front to 8 lug to widen the stance some and eliminate any rear axle worries. That should all be happening around Thanksgiving. In the mean time, I am going to install a new Luk clutch(this weekend), and swap the yota springs to Chevy 52's and get it ready to go again. Hope to make a HF trip between now and Thanksgiving time. The next mod after that will be converting to Automatic. Looking at putting a th350 behind it, and either a 4:1 dana 300, or a 203/300 doubler (depends on length issues). Also will be picking up a chevy 44 housing to narrow to waggy width (width of a driver drop, not a pass drop version), and moving all my stuff into it to match the dana 300. This will also keep the driveline on one side, and the exhaust on another. Yes, the auto will rob some power, but the extra gearing will make up for it. I dont want to change the motor out as it runs too well, and I don't want to get involved in an engine swap at this time. After the 1st of the year my work schedule will so hectic that I can't even think about a trip until Memorial Day, so that will give me plenty of time to get the tranny taken care of. I have located a th350, and the d44 housing, working on getting the flexplate (hard to find part), and found the bolt pattern adapter for $70 new. Should just be a matter of getting the converter modified to bolt up to the Jeep flexplate and I will be good to go. Next time this thing hits K2 or Trees, it will be in much better condition, and be more prepared for a weekend of fun!

Seems we were in the same boat with minor issues keeping us from wheeling. Keep me posted on plans for HF...like to do a Turkey Run but my daughters birthday is that weekend so not sure what my plans are. My buddy wants to go mid December as well. Jeep looks good

Clutch is in and back to driving condition. Had to replace the CPS due to my stupidity LoL.. Fixed the rear yoke and driveshaft as well, and installed a new set of Daystar body mounts with built in 1" lift. The lift will help me be sure I have a truly flat belly when I do the TH350 and dana 300 install. Won't be too bad being at 100" wheel base with 24" of belly height, my buggy was 116" and had 18" belly.. Still a few minor odds and ends to button up, and still need to do the rear spring swap (parts from Ruffstuff will be here Monday). Should be back and in better wheeling shape by next weekend. Then, on to building the 14 bolt for the next swap.

Little update: Plans were to narrow a chevy 44 housing to waggy width, swap all my guts over to it and swap in a th350/dana 300 behind the 2.5. Well, things changed somewhat.

1. The th350 will not work without some $$$$$ custom parts, mainly converter as the converter is to large to fit in the reluctor ring on the flexplate.

2. The guy I bought the th350 from, happened top also have a complete Chevy dana 60 that I was able to snag for only a couple of Franklins.

So, that brings us to this point. All the parts are here to build the 14 bolt, and it will be staying SRW width. 5.38's, Detroit, Discs, trussed/bridged. Will have a set of 52" springs for rear suspension(will not change wheelbase at all with these)

Parts for the 60 are on the way, it will be 5.38's and a spool.

Picking up a 700r4 next week, v8 version, and will be using it for the conversion. After more in depth research, the converter size I need is available, and I can make it bolt up to the 2.5 easily. May have to get new tabs welded on the converter, and possibly a pilot machined to support the snout, but that wont be terrible to have done. Still going to build the 300 with 4:1's to put behind it.

Now, I have also acquired RVReddog's old TBI 350 which will later on find its way into the engine bay. While I could just do it now, I really dont feel like doing an engine swap at this time. The 2.5 runs good, it may lack some power, but it will get the job done. I can spend the next year or so freshening up the engine and next winter swap it in. At that point it would literally just be an engine swap, as the necessary tranny would already be installed.

Plans are to get the axles under the rig in 2 weeks, and then start working on the transmission and case. I need to have it back together fully by the end of the year if at all possible, which really shouldnt be terribly difficult.

You talked about an engine swap, that's not happening at this time.
