Anyone have any first hand experience with one of these? If they work the price isn't bad. I figure you get what ya pay for so I don't expect it to be a very good unit.

Harbor freight 12k FTW! Same price and decent winch.

The word is these have cast planetary gears that when hot and dry will crack and explode. Check out Runva. I love mine. They supposedly have machined and hardened planetary gears. Free shipping and no tax

Basically those import winches are all the same, they just have different stickers.

I would not buy one from JCWhitney, I would just go to the nearest Harbor Freight and buy one, then you have the option of a warranty and a place to return it if it ever does fail. So far HF has stood by thier warranty on the few items I have returned.

This one is not wireless, but it is rated for 12,000 lbs.

I have a HF winch from way back, before they were called "Badland". The stickers have long since fell of but I think it was called "Champion" back then. IT was $300 way back then and it's only rated at 7500 lbs.

ANY winch will fail if it is run "hot and dry", abused, overloaded, and not maintained. Just because a truck weighs 3000 lbs does not mean a 3000 lb winch will pull it straight up the face of a mountain.

I agree with everything said above. I have had a HF 12k for almost 5 years, with the optional warranty and they have replaced it twice free of charge. once was my fault on not maintaining it (sat outside for a year while I was away and I didnt check it out before I needed to use it).. the second time was a very sticky situation and it just imploded inside its self!!! HF is a short drive away for pretty much all of us, where as JCW is gonna be a ship to them/wait for a replacement type deal
