Dual Remote Bypass filtration

My wife bought a new 2008 Expedition with a 5.4L V8 in July. I have always wanted to install a good filtration system but never thought it was worthwhile on a used vehicle. Below are details of the dual remote bypass oil filter system. Since it's 2WD there is a lot of room in front of the axle and behind the front bumper to mount it. The second pic is looking from the passenger side at the driver side inside frame rail and the third pic is looking at the oil filter from the front.

The part numbers for the different systems are specific to each vehicle. The filters and filter housings are interchangeable but some of the interconnecting fittings are different. Below are some PDF's with details of the different types of systems.

This is a basic system to do bypass filtering. It taps into the oil pressure sender fitting and sends a little bit of flow through 2 micron filter continuously as there is oil pressure.

http://www.amsoil.com/bypassfilters/...tions/BP83.pdf

This is the system I installed. It combines the remote filter and the bypass filter into one unit. I increased the size of the "full flow" filter, which is equivalent to the spin on factory filter. There is also a "bypass" filter on the same filter adapter which filters oil continuously with a 2 micron filter.

http://www.amsoil.com/bypassfilters/...ions/BP252.pdf

All of the systems allow for various size (2.85" to 7.04" long) full flow filters and a range (5.78" to 10.44" long) bypass filters.

The "full flow" filters act just as the stock oil filter does, that is, it filters all the flow from the oil pump before it enters the engine. The "bypass" filters use a little bleed in the pressure side of the housing and run that through a 2 micron filter to catch all the small particles that get through the full flow filter.

At work, I studied about hydraulics some years ago. This "bypass" concept is the BEST way to maintain clean fluid in any hydraulic system.

Here is the website with all the systems. Note, the prices listed are retail, I can hook you up with wholesale pricing.

Pretty nice filter housing. It came with all the necessary hardware, but of course, I still had to make part of the bracket to fit where I wanted it.

The hose and fittings are pretty large. The fitting has a .419" hole in it and the hose has a full 1/2" inner diameter and 450 psi working pressure. An important note about the hose and fittings. Since I had a lot of hose left over, I thought I could just buy another filter housing , then go to the hydraulic supply house and cobble up a second system. Unfortunately, the fittings and hose that come with the system are not a common hydraulic style and must be ordered. The fittings have much better flow capacity than the "common" stuff, and of course, a lower pressure rating.

Here's the engine adapter. The elbow fitting can be rotated to aim any direction.

Here's the adapters installed. No more than 18" of hose on each side.

Comparison of the new filters vs the original one. The top pic is the "full flow" filter which does the same job as the original filter did when mounted to the block. The second pic shows the "bypass" filter. It continuously filters oil at 2 microns while there is pressure. The bypass filter is next to the original full flow factory filter. As you can see, I gained quite a bit more filtering capacity and about 2 more quarts of oil in the system. Originally used 7 qts, now almost 9. The important thing to mention here, is, even though I added a lot of capacity to the factory filter the real benefit is the addition of the "bypass" filter which the vehicle never had.

The finished install. The filters are well above the frame rails, very easy to get to.

Dott the only thing i can see in useing that. Is help you change the oil filter on that ford. There a pain in the @$$ to change. Wife has a 07 5.4 f150 CrewCab. Its one of the hardest and messest oil changes i ever had to do. id reather change the tranny filter and oil in my dodge then her ford.

So whats the plus side to having a dual filter setup. Like better mileage or something. You should allready be changing you oil every 3000miles and you should be using the motorcraft synthetic oil in it. Just asking!

I use synthetic oil and go 7500 miles on it, probably could go more with this filter setup. Also, the added surface area of the extra hardware and filters adds cooling capacity. It is even easier to change the filters now.

Correction 10-24-09: I have run the oil 12000 miles, then changed the full flow filter and refilled the lost quart. Then ran 12000 more miles, replaced the bypass filter and added the lost quart. With oil ananysis, I can keep going like this for 100s of thousands of miles.

The added quart of fluid replenishes the additives and the good filtration keeps the oil cleaner than when it came out of the bottle. Plus, I don't have to deal with all that waste oil.

Addition 12-29-10: Recently received the oil analysis for 22000 miles. Oil is still suitable for continued use.

I decided to do a visual test of the oil in my vehicles. Each one has different mileage on the oil. This is not a scientific test but I wanted to see if there were any visual differences in the oil.

Test vehicles:
2001 F350 w/ 6.8L V10
currently 151,399 miles, running Amsoil 0w30 synthetic and stock filtration

1995 Camry w/ 2.2L 4cyl
currently 259,194 miles, running Pennzoil 10w40 and stock filtration

2008 Ford Expedition w/5.4L
currently 10,246 miles, running Amsoil 5W20 and dual bypass filtration
(pic incorrectly states 5.7L engine)

The samples below were taken from the dipstick. One drop onto a mirror and covered with a paper towel to spread the oil out. Probably should have used a piece of toilet paper without the pleating.

I'm surprised that the oil with 7,380 miles w/ dual filtration looks a lot like the 1,084 mile oil from the Camry. I'm not surprised about the oil with 13,017 miles and stock filtration.

Good write up. It was pretty straight forward when I did the one on my Duramax. Do you have the petcock valve which makes it easier to get an oil analysis? I didn't see it in the schematic pictured above. I'm waiting on my oil analysis kit so I can send in a sample. Truck's on ~12K miles since I added the Amsoil bypass with Amsoil synthetics. Too bad I can't do the visual test as the oil turned black as soon as I cranked the motor after changing the oil lol. Gotta love dem diesels

Supposedly, it won't do that with the dual remote. The bypass is a 2 micron filter.

Still need to verify the freebee.

I put one on the clean side of the filter adapter. There are extra ports and the kit comes with plugs.
