sm465 shifter slop fix

Just did this today and it was so easy i really dont know why anyone would not do it to thir sm465. I ended up with absolutely no slop at all, making for very positive, easy shifts.

Youll need

3/8-16 tap

2x 3/8-16 grade 8 bolts and nuts
Welder
Vise-grips
2x 9/16 wrenches
Red thread lock
Maybe a punch (if your shifter pins arent out)

1st take your boot and shift knob off of your shifter and youll see this (with two pins where my picture shows bolts)

Press down on the outer metal ball at the shifter base and turn it a 1/4 turn to the left to remove the shifter from the transmission housing (takes some decent pressure and a fair amount of swearing to get it out)

If you look at the bottom of the ball that sits in the transmission housing youll see 2 spot welds that hold it to the shaft (they are usually broken). Weld all the way around the ball and youll end up with this

Youll see the bottom of the shifter is also just held together with pins, so i promptly welded that together as well

Now go back to your housing and pull your dowel pins out with vise grips, if theyre not out enough to get vise grips on you may have to tap them with a punch from the back side

With the pins out tap the housing with your 3/8-16 tap

Put the shifter back in the housing and put nuts on your bolts first and then thread them into the housing, turn the outer ball a 1/4 turn to fasten the shifter down

Tighten the bolts evenly until you have no slop and tighten your jam nuts. Dont forget loc-tite!

I welded my shifter like you did and it helped greatly. Never thought about tapping the holes. I may look at that as my pins keep coming loose.

Thanks! It really wasnt very hard, figuring out how the shifter came out took the longest

One of my roll pins actually completely snapped off on one side, which is why my shifter was so extremely sloppy. Im glad i decided to tear into this thing, otherwise it couldve been a short stop to a wheeling weekend

So, I did this today and now the shifter will not let me put it in low and 2nd, 1st, 3rd, and reverse are fine. I cleaned up the welds real well, not sure why, any suggestions?

Magilla just gettin started
Update?

Rebuilding my sm 465 now - really glad I came across this thread! Great pics, and great info.

Curious as to the last issue identified. What caused the shifter to bind, and did you figure it out?

Last, I read some threads on a Chevy truck forum about similar mods, and the guy pushed out the lower roll pin and put two rubber o-rings on the lower piece-the slider tang before reinserting. Made it very tight, but no buzz. I do not know the long term status of this mod.

Do you have any second thoughts about welding upper and lower piece?

Thanks for any replies. I have a 350 Buick going into a 69 Jeepster Commando with SM465 and Dana 20.
