Snorkel build

Here are some pics that I took building my snorkel. If y'all have any ???'s let me know. But for the most part it's all about imagination and ingenuity, haha i think that's how you spell it.
Here is what the engine bay looks like without the intake hose in an 87 bronc.

I was checking to see if the 2 1/2" pipe that I bought would fit in the hose, and was able to slide it in about 2" or so and cut off the excess.

Here is what the original design was going to look like.

But I wasn't sure that it would flow very well so I decided to got to an exhaust shop and had them build a "y" for me. So this is what it looks like inside now.

Since I only cut off about 4" of the hose the exhaust pipe still fit where the first "y" is at, but now it has better flow. From there I used 3" pipe from there out using silicone to seal everything up. I used silicone because of any of it ends up breaking then I won't have to build the whole thing again just the part that's busted.

From there I tried to follow the body lines and windshield post up for better looks, no main reason , also I used a 60* elbow to shoot the snorkel up by the windshield post.

Since I didn't have any plumbers tape I bought some rigid angled tin from Lowes with predrilled holes and used self tapping screws to hold it all in, and slid a 3 1/2" hose clamp underneath to secure the snorkel.
.

Here is how it looks all mocked up just to see how it's all going to fit together.

It looked good to me so I glued it all up with RTV silicone. Here is what the clearences look like. I'm sure that I'm going to change something on it before i'm done with it but so far this is how it sits and it works good. Oh yea i also removed the air filter box, since the pipe is running right in it's path.

Hope that this can help ya or give ya an idea or two.

As long as you like it.....enjoy. I've never thought about running a snorkel for height but have to get the air from the cab vs under the hood while mud racing. Why do people put a snorkel higher then their head? You'll drown before the motor gets water. Just my $.02

I think that's the idea, if their head is under water, it's time to stop and back up.

Have you ever seen the video where the soldier dons scuba gear and drives a duece and a half across a river? There are girls swimming under the water waving at him IIRC. It is pretty peemp.

I think this is it...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okfmSGdT3rA

I have been wanting to put one on mine for a while, but I haven't had the time to fab up a box for the top of the propane carb and haven't found a viable one online either. I plan to run mine straight back through the firewall and up to the top of the cab. It should help to keep the dust, mud and water out, plus it will be pulling cooler (denser) air.

Wow, cool video.

So how are you sealing up everything else to withstand the water?

we have built a few snorks
here is a pic of mine
it is ran straight into my dash
i pop the glove box and BAM there it is my air filter
and it is all opened up under there so i get plenty of air flow
i used a spectre elbo and black plunger (so i could have some give when motor torgues)
i had to redo my duct work for my vents
but all in all it turned out good
i wouldnt really call mine a true snork
but it does exactly what i want and i havent had 1 stall or prob.
i can go just about as deep as i want as fast as i want

I have been looking for an elbow like that for a while, but don't know if it's going to flow enough air around the top of my propane carb.

With the 'top' on propane carbs, I was worried it might get in the way. I checked last night and found dimensions for the Impco 425 and should have plenty of room. Now just need to source all the rest of the parts and plumb it up (oh, and actually find the time to work on it....) :E

Iíve wondered what was involved in putting a snorkel on the rig. Just never researched it. Too many other things to do on the rig. But nice thread.

The intake noise in the cab would get old quick on that one through the firewall. Bet it works like a champ, though. Looks clean.

It is what it is, I try to stay outa the water. If I get in, something breaks, it always happens.

I think I have some bad voodoo, cuz I can drive all day without a problem, get wet and something goes wrong within 15 minutes.

So I just stay on the rocks!
