Places to hunt

Are there any good places to hunt pheasant and mule deer for cheap? Is there any public land to hunt? I know the seasons are over now, but I'm trying to plan for next year. Thanks.

I'm not sure around Amarillo, but there is public land at Matador. Get with DreamCrusher he is from Matador.

My family's always had good luck up around Silverton with mule deer. I havn't ever asked about going up there though... I can check and see if she (my aunt) leases it or if it's all reserved. My uncle just died last year so I dunno...

I've got another plot of land outside Lockney that I've thought about planting more pheasant on. We've hunted there a few times with success...

Mitch,
There is some state land at Tell, Texas. It is the Matador Wildlife Refuge and I have heard that the deer hunting is excellent. My Wifes Dr. has a place at Cee Vee in Cottle Co. and he took a White Tail there this year with a bow that scored 158 B&C. There are several places around Matador that offer day hunts fairly cheap. I just looked in the Matador paper and didn't see any places to lease but there are usually some in there. I will keep my eyes out for something like that if you want.
If you are looking for Mule Deer you have to go North of Matador....Silverton is good late in the season when they start making their way up onto the Caprock looking for food. Quitaque and Turkey are really good for Mule Deer. You can hunt the Praire Dog Town Fork of the Red River it is State owned land. It runs north of Turkey and meets up with the Red River at Childress.

In the business that I am in I deal with landowners in this area all the time so just let me know what you are looking for and I'll keep my eye out.

If you want pheasant I know a guy that guides in Kansas. The northern panhandle....Dalhart, Dumas, Perryton....even Silverton, Lockney, Floydada are still really good places.

My buddy came down this year to my place north of Matador and took this buck. He was older and needed to be culled so he took him. He wasn't pretty, broke a few points, but he taste really good!

You might also try the Nat. Forest Service, they run part of the area around the Canadian river.
