Not exactly sure how they are planning to do it but at this point I am against them charging fees to watch the events. I am usually in favor of the charging of fees for certain events say like a Katemcy run or a WEROCK event. But this is after all on public land. I would rather see a park usage fee for the weekend with the money going to the river area than being charged to watch a few events that I usually dont watch all that much anyway.

what's thier reasoning behind charging gate fees? Is this the host club, sponsoring all the door prizes, food, working the event, keeping everything going, etc?

Nick, I meant is this why they are charging gate? As in is TORA the sponsor of this event, like Texas4x4 is the sponsor of the Summer Run. If they are I can see why they would charge a gate. If they are not the sponsor club and are not doing food, raffles, etc. then why would they charge gate?

Tora

As I understand it. Tora has the majority of the workload. I mean at the river. They fight to keep it open, hold clean ups, and the work that is involved to run a 'EVENT' that can host 15 to 20 thousand people could give enough resources, (READ "CASH") to in effect, help with OUR cause at the river. I'm willing to drop 20 to 50 dollars to help TORA out. But like Rastus said, "What is it going for?" Purses? Clean up? working with the FEDS to fix the problems at Rosita flats?
If TORA, really is going to help build a course for ROCK CRAWLING, with some INPUT, What is it going to hurt even if it fails. So you lose a few weekends and some cheap rot gut and whiskey money? Maybe I like to be a Glass is Half Full kind of guy. But,
.................................................. .................................................. .....................
CAN WE PUT THE DRAMA ASIDE AND TRY SOMETHING NEW?
Maybe we all work together, get some good $^!+ built, have a good time without the DRAMA!
No knives, no bad nights from whiskey,(ME), and see some CARNAGE!!

Or

Continue with the current degradation of Amarillo's and the Texas Panhandles Reputation?

No excuses. NO "My wife is mad and wouldn't let me cause she wanted to spend time together." A response would be, "Well Honey, these next few weekends we are going to do some nature hikes that involve trimming trees and moving boulders. Hell, might even end up with a new Rattle Snake skin purse!."

Again,
This hinges on what TORA is thinking.

James

Post script,
Sorry, I was bored and felt inspired.
I won't let it happen again.

I see how having TORA involved can help the river overall.....

I understand that they fought hard to preserve the river(as did the rest of us)

I do not agree with any sort of "blanket" gate fee...to me, that is just another type of control like the Feds might use to regulate the river....

..after all, the river is public domain.....

..if the state wants to restrict access to the flats and points east, then let 'em....BUT, the rest of the area belongs to all of us....

I would feel better about this if we knew exactly what the $ was going.....

I dont think its possible to keep track of who has paid gate fees and who has not. with the amount of traffic that goes through there that weekend it would be caos. they would have traffic backed up all the way to Amarillo. i can see some major road rage happening while sitting and waiting to get through. Now i confused myself......how exactly do they plan on doing this?

I will find out for sure where all the money will go,But I'm sure most will go for land use fights legal and court fees and running the event.I'm 100% for chargeing, I'm not sure how well the whole thing can be done with 20k people and so many rigs and a fence, hills, and a river. As soon as I find out more I will let everyone know.Rember without tora the would be no sanddrags or a river to wheel at!

I agree, but remember, the logistics of well, basically telling folks that they can't just be there without paying a fee are rough...

..rope off the individual events and charge the people that participate, not the spectators...

..there are just too many people that will throw trash, talk trash and act like trash even if you get a "gate fee" out of 'em..

...it is public domain, and you can't make people pay to be on public land....

I want just as much as anyone to keep the place clean and safe and OPEN,
but I will not pay anyone anything to be a spectator or camp out on public land.....I will pay to compete in any organized event, I will pay to camp or wheel on private/state owned land....

The area that would include the sand drags, mud bogs & crawl comp would be too big to "patrol" who paid/who didnt. Also, the area is too big to pay & walk in/walk back to rig when ready to play. Im not sure how i feel about all this, but i have to agree with you here. You do know the river & how it gets in feb.

This is how its been for years....as far as i know, its never been a plan to get rich. Only pay for making the event happen from year to year.Which i realize is getting harder to do every year.

Once again, you know the river & its people.......maby 50% of the "out of towners" & "1 weekend wonder" locals have ANY respect for the establishment. Charging people to see what they have always been able to come & go & see as they please is a quick way to see the rest of the river trashed in short order.

Maby i have said too much already.....back to thinking to myself.

I would be willing, much like everyone here, to "pay to play" if the circumstances were properly aligned.....make the whole river
a regulated "orv" area of sorts....restrooms, at least one paved parking area, regular trash removal, some type of patrols (not just for holidays or big events)etc..etc...

in this instance, the drunks, idiots and dummies would probably not pay just to party or act like fools....they'd be forced to go elsewhere....but, I digress......only the state/county could come in and really pull that off...

...my other concern would be an actual fall off in the attendance of folks who do give a damn, but have to come in from out of town...one of the greatest things in favor of the river is that it's FREE.....just how many other places in Texas are like that??!?!?

river

I do not know how I really feel about this but I do not agree with them trying to rope it off and regulate it. I do not think this would work and I think once the out of towners hear about this they will not come. Yes, this might keep some of the riff raff out, but it would drive a bunch of good people off from coming that normally would and I can't see that one event would do all this. It pulls at you from both sides. I think TORA owes an expalanation to all of us and what they intend to do.

I have no doubt the money that TORA receives will be used wisely. They are a good group of people that have done great things for our small community.

I will be interested to hear how they intend to accomplish it though.

The stickers are a TPW thing. The money goes to the state and is supposed to go towards offroad park related expenses.
