We have a shop/club in central Austin called Krawltex Motorsports. Drop me a line if you head down this way.

So, basically you're all saying that there's NO Austin-based 4x4 club that's open to all (meaning not Jeep/Chevy/Ford exclusive)? I just purchased my first 4x4 (Z71) and am looking to join a local club (I'm in Round Rock) for all experience levels so I can learn how to enjoy off-roading while being safe and responsible at the same time.

The only one I've found is Austin TX4WD but there is virtually no way to contact them via their website (it's seriously out of date and broken), which is incredibly frustrating.

There's also the Longhorn Offroad, but it's exclusive to U.T. students (which I'm not).

So far, I can't find any *active* Austin-based 4x4 club. Is there one that I simply haven't found yet?

Hey Lightning,
Might want to re-read the posts. We have a club that's opened to anyone. Come by the shop if you're ever in the area.

Hey Glenn, I did catch your post the first time around, but I didn't get the feel that your shop acted as a full-time club as well. But I'm new to all of this, so I might just have gotten the wrong impression on my own.

I checked out the site (again) and spent a little more time in the forums. Seems like a pretty good online community that you've got going there. I'd love to stop by the store (you also have some darn good specials too) but I'll do it in a few weeks when I have some cash on hand even if I don't plan on buying anything (I hate going into stores when my wallet is empty and knowing I can't buy anything)... oh what the hell, I need new shocks anyway.

I'm assuming when I eventually make it into the store, I can just ask for you?

hey Lucky, our name says K5 ( http://austink5.net ) but we are far from exclusive. I started the site for about 5-6 of us that all had K5's at the time, but there is a trend lately for many of the die-hard fullsize chevy guys on AK5 to sell the blazer/truggy's and build up the smaller/lighter toyotas. I personally don't subscribe to the madness but I digress...

we have plenty of guys that live here in the area (Pflugerville, Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park) that are active and wheeling ... but the majority are a bit hardcore.

we don't conduct ourselves as a club though, so if that is a requirement, then I wish you luck. We just hang out, party, wrench, and occasionally wheel.

Thanks micah, that info helps. I don't know if I'm really looking for a "club" per se, as much as a group of experienced wheelers that I can learn from.

I'll register on your site and see how it goes. Thanks again for the info.

Lightning,

You are more than welcome to wheel with us Krawltex guys. We wheel at least once a month somewhere in Texas and are NOT Jeep specific. Somehow every couple of months, there's a shop kegger for one reason or another. We don't have dues or officers. Krawltex is very laid back. We just post when and where we want to go, or take a poll. Then we meet up and wheel. In february, we're sponsoring Tech Offroad's First Annual College Run at Katemcy... assuming Krocks gets back to Kyle, the President of Tech Offroad. Kyle just founded the club and was a former President of Longhorn Offroad a couple years ago.

I founded Longhorn Offroad in 98 and was the President in 99. Longhorn is really open to anybody that is college aged and in Austin. We do have some older alum like myself, and even a few UT staff members in Longhorn. We tailgate, party, hunt, fish, and shoot skeet together when we aren't wheeling. It's a lot more close knit than most offroad clubs. Longhorn Offroad tends to be light on the wheeling untill football season is over. But for me, the Krawltex and Longhorn clubs overlap.

Nate Biggs is the third partner in Krawltex Motorsports. He is also in Longhorn Offroad and was one of the Austin Jeep Exclusive founders with Ray from Jeepmasters. Austin's 4 wheelers are a pretty intertwined community, and you can be as active as you want. If I had more time, I'd hop on AustinK5's board. We already have a couple of great customers from that website.
