Is the biggest PITA that I have come across. Nevermind about the tooling marks on the bearing surface. That is nothing in comparison. Worry about clearancing the case itself so that the ring gear doesn't hit it, on the gear side. Worry about having to move the entire carrier so far to the left, that you have to put the spanner on that side in a lathe to turn it down, to get it to fit. Then you have to notch the housing to get the lock pin back in on that side. I had to drill a new hole in the spanner to get the punch in it for final tightening. I used all the shims I had, to make the pinion depth correct.
Then after all of that, and the 8 foot cheater bar for the crush sleeve, I put the cover back on and go to install the driveshaft and guess what? The pinion won't turn. Why, you ask, because the bolts heads that hold the ring gear onto the locker are now digging into my diff cover. After removing the cover and removing some material, it all works. I just to get another 5 gallons of 90wt to put in the diff.
BTW...... A big thanks to Kert for making the razorback so thick
I bet you are right, but when I called randys they didn't mention anything about a thick or thin. Ya know, when the guy told me that I needed a 4.10 carrier to put in the 5.38 I should have thought something was up. Oh well, they are in.
Do you see any problems with it, if it patterened ok?
OK..... The 5.38 should have been mounted to a 4.10 carrier, not the 4.56 that I used. They only make the 5.38 in a thick gear. All of my problems came from putting them on the wrong carrier.
Goochie, I don't know what they cost because I bought the gears and install kits for both axles and the 35 spline outers and ujoints at the same time. It was under a thousand for all of it. I bought it from Expert offroad in Plano. A great bunch of guys.
Like Bruiser hit on, gears are often offered in "thick" and "thin" sets. Thick sets generally mean they are designed to be run with the numerically lower carriers of the carrier break. 5.38's for the 14 bolt full float are only offered in the thick sets. I know 5.13's can be ordered thin. 4.56 can be purchased thick or thin.
Good thread, especially since I just bought a 14FF.
