Beavis and Butthead says " always use a wood block on the end of those pinion threads and if possible screw the pinion nut back on a few threads before you beat it off with a hammer". Probably what has happened is a little water has caused some surface rust on the pinion shaft and it is not wanting to slide over the inner surface of the small bearing.
