My new ride, first diesel

Just picked up a new project last Monday. This was my Grandpa's truck before he passed away a few years ago. I have been meaning to pick it up, finally got around to it. It's a '92 Dodge Power Ram 250, 12 valve, 5 speed with the 60 front, 70 rear. 180,000 miles on this bad boy. It's 100% stock, not even straight-piped.

Here she is behind the wife's truck.

Finally home. It has a long way to go, but the plan is to make it look better than new, then modify! It's got the typical rust on the roof and crappy paint. Kinda scared how much that's gonna cost to fix. Otherwise it's pretty solid. First thing to go is the grille guard, then the plan is to pull the body off and blast/paint the frame. Then body work and paint, then MORE POWER!

Last pic I have of it for now. Just after a little rain.
It's gonna be a slow build as money permits, but it's a pretty special truck to me so I can't wait to get started. Let me know what you think.

Looks cool, good luck on the project.

I've been considering one of these for my next purchase. I like these older bodies much more than the newer.

**** man. Leave the paint the way it is and hit it with a coat of clear and call it a day. I have seen some sweet looking rat rods and such that were done up that way and they were sweet.

Thanks ManiacXJ. I like the look of these old Dodges too, and most of the parts I have found so far are reasonably priced. It's gonna add up quick though.

Ya, I'm into the rat rod look, but this one is gonna be shiny. My main concern right now is fixing the roof rust. There is about a 1/2" by 6" hole on the passengers side, and the driver's side is bubbling up. Right on the front of the roof. I want to get that taken care of before it gets worse and get it painted black again.

That's a great truck to have. I had one like that but sold it like a dumba$$. It will be really nice when you get done with it. Gonna make a nice tow rig for your Jeep. Are you going to K2 for Memorial Weekend?

Oh yeah good luck with that 5 speed. They lose 5th gear a lot. There is a few fixes to help this problem though.

Looks pretty good but it would look better if it was parked in my driveway. I always did like that body style.

Na, not gonna make it. I will actually be home from work that weekend but I have other plans with the family. I would like to go at least check it out, I've never been.

Ha! Thanks. It would only be a visit, I don't plan on parting with this thing. Hey by the way, did y'alls dad or uncle get a new truck? My dad was saying he saw one of them in an old rat rod or hot rod.

Very cool.

I was very very close to my G-PA, I can understand how special this build will be.

What are your plans for color, wheels, tires, etc??

I can't wait to get started on it, but I work out of town so it will be a pretty slow build. I love it so far, but it hasn't cost me too terribly much yet!

Yep, we were pretty close as well. I'm not gonna get too crazy on it for a while. First I'm gona strip the body off and clean up the frame, then have all the body work done and clean up the interior. It's gonna stay black. Then a few performance mods and eventually lift it. I want to get it in factory fresh condition first though. Probably no bigger than 35-37's, I want to keep it as a DD. I'm guessing I'll go with KM2's and probably something like Classic II's in a 16 or 17. I think they will fit the look of the truck pretty well.

Daaang, old school. My grandpa actually used to have about a '77 Ford High Boy with 9.00-16's. That would look pretty cool, maybe I could do that until I go a little bigger. The BFG's on it now are pretty dry-rotted. They have awesome tread depth too but look pretty dangerous.

Big Hemi? I haven't seen it yet, I'll keep an eye out.

For sure. 12 days left until I go home, I'm ready to make some progress.

Thanks. I'm sure it won't be near as awesome as yours is gonna turn out though. If you don't mind me asking, about how much did it cost to have your frame powdercoated? There is only one shop that I know of in Victoria, but I'm not sure if they can do something that big. I don't know if I want to blast it and paint it, or spend the money on powdercoat. I'm kinda thinking it would be worth it to go ahead and just spend the money.

To do the frame, 2 inner fenders and the radiator core support it was 500.00. I think he said a regular/standard size frame only was around 350.00. He charged me a little more since mine was 18.1' loong, it barely fit in their booth. lol.

IMO you've got something special since it was your grand dads. Glad to see you restoring it!! A complete 100% orginial resto would be pretty cool as well!

Well that's not too bad, cheaper than I had thought. I'll have to look more in to it. Thanks.

Wow that's a lotter cheaper than around here. Name and address of the powder coating place. Might have to pull the crawler apart and get it coated.
