Need some advice on Padre beach camping.

(MODERATOR If this post needs to be another forum feel free to move it).

Myself and some other west Texas flatlanders are planning a Padre National Seashore trip at the end of October. I have driven the beach down 20-30 miles in the family rides but have never been way down. We are going to trailer down my crew cab and a CJ then drive till there are no neighbors and camp. My questions are:

Where is a safe place to park the tow rig on a Saturday night and not get messed with?

Any place we could camp one night close to town with room to park the tow rig and everything before we head down the beach?

Is late October a good time as far as weather, fishing, not too many people etc?

Is there cell service down there?

Without getting too serious what is the minimum for fishing gear?
(We are taking a couple of kayaks to bait out with.)

Anyone have a packing list or must haves for beach driving/camping that they care to share?

(I have a pretty good list for backwoods camping like the YETI, along with a big fuel tank and big water tank but there is always something missing.)

Any help or advice is appreciated.

How long is the towrig/trailer combo?? IS the cj street legal/highway driveable?? You could park your towrig/trailer at my house is you like, I am about 20 minutes from the national seashore. As long as it will fit at my place, you are more than welcome to park it.

As for other questions, late october should be good, we do have occasional cold fronts by that time though so watch for those. Cell service is hit and miss, I have sprint and have service around 20 mm or so. Fishing gear, light tackle all the way to big stuff, you can catch whiting all the way to big sharks and everything in between. Have some medium sized setups with some cut mullet on em for bull reds as they are still active in the surf at that time. Bring some alcohol and peroxide and bandages just in case of any cuts for sure, and bring a handgun just in case. It is VERY rare, but illegals will come up the beach, and carrting a gun in a national park is now legal.

If you want a place in town to stop the first night, Labonte Park, on the nueces river just as you hit corpus is a good spot to camp/ and even fish. There is a dam there freshwater only on one side/brackish-salt on the other. You can catch all sorts of fish there at times, bass all the way to redfish.

It's a crew cab dodge and 30' flatbed. The CJ is not currently legal but I will make it so for the trip down. I assume that the 30 day temporary vehicle tags are good enough for the national park too. I have a buddy that lives about 10 miles north of town, I have not talked to him yet but I think I can park and camp there. I will let you know as soon as I talk to him. Thank you very much for your offer.

We'll definatly have to plan something David. Hell we can plan something out and load up in my boat and stay at our cabin a night or 2. We have a cabin just south of baffin bay, lots of good fishing there.

Great info, as far as illegals and handguns I am CCW licensed and always carry, good deal the parks changed the law.

I have seen the Labonte Park, didn't know it was good fishing but I will keep that on my list.

make sure you bring a good size pot and some of the gel fire packs to boil water incase somebody gets hit by a stingray. get the water as hot as you can stand it and pour it on the wound or soak the wound to kill the neurotoxin otherwise you'll be looking at some serious pain.

as for cell service you can sometimes get it on top of the dunes and if your by mansfield jetty you can sometimes get service there to

Thanks for more good info, will be prepared. Any idea how hot the water needs to be? I have a deep fry thermometer in my cook box.

Suburban would be great for this. I had lifted 90 model I wanted to build but sold it after I found this crew cab. I just had to have one of these and cannot afford to build both.

Anyone ever try tor run an unmodified Deuce and Half on the beach. I have one sitting here ready to go, just not too stoked about driving it that far. It would be the cats ***** for hauling all the stuff down there.

I have not run mine on the beach yet but the previous owner did. Mine has super singles now so I can cruise 65 or 70 mph. He did say that the stock tire were a little scary sometimes in the sand and if he did it again he would want two deuces down there.

There use to be a towing company in Corpus Christi that had a duece they used for beach extractions. I use to see it all the time when I went to big shell years ago.
