Rock Crawling or Trail Riding.

If you don't know by now i'm into big 4X4 trucks and have been my whole life but i'm in my 30's and have full custody of my 3 wonderful kids (single dad) and pretty much retired from a company i own (Doctor Pc) but anyway i wanted to get into Rock/Trail crawling also because it looks fun plus i think it would be nice for my kids.

1) Where would one start?
2) I have to know 1 to ask 2. LOL

Maybe someone in Corpus can show me their rig and teach me about the do's and don't that would help allot.

Thanks

Sounds like you wanna sell black beauty. I agree with Jeremy though. If youre just getting into it, then I'd buy a somewhat built rig. There's a really good looking truggy for sale in the classifieds. It would make a perfect starter rig.

Oh no i will keep the Excursion I feel really safe driving around (so high up) even if i only get 10m per gallon. Tell you the truth that most people with big trucks wont, i only use it for looks and sand. Not much mud around here.

I thought i might want to start from the ground up so i can learn everything about the truck plus i think building it is half the fun but 2 members already told me i should buy a somewhat built truck so maybe i should re-think my starting point.

The building thing made me think about after a building is done shouldn't it be called a built? LOL j/k

Thanks for the replies.

I'm in the same boat as you. I built several mud trucks until I got burnt out on it. I wanted to try my stake at crawling and wanted to build a rig from the ground up. Alot of the guys on here convinced me to buy an already built rig to see how I liked crawling first. That's what I ended up doing. The truck I bought wasn't completely done but it atleast drove under it's own power. This way I can stil build it up along the way, but still able to wheel and not get burnt out.

Even in stock form a 1985 4Runner toyota that has EFI would be a great base for building a street legal Rock Crawler. Cheaper of all the makes out their.
As you gain experiance you. The up grades go hand in hand. It will seat 4.
for starters a roll cage and rear Locker will go a long way.
going well built and having no experiance might get you in trouble. IMHO
Marlin Crawler and Trail Gear are a few web cites that have treated me well. They are toyota base web cites for up-grades. Local classified are also great to look for stuff.

Rock Crawling or Trail Riding.

I agree with alot of these guys. Buy something you can enjoy right away but don't get something over your head.

I'm not going to lie, I haven't done much wheeling since
I'm just getting into the sport but I hope to change that so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I may be a little biased but k5s are a great platform to build off of. Also Look at Off road design, diy4x and places like that if you like Chevys.

If I was to start over again with more rock crawling in mind then I would go with a Toyota. Those guys are light and nimble and you can wheel them without beating your sheetmetal to bits.

Like I said just my two cents.

If you want to build something then do it, just remember that crawling is a different beast and supper tall trucks just wont work in this world. I know I'll get lots of crap but get a Jeep to start with, no lift, low gears, lockers and 35s would get you going good.

you can come by here anytime and see what you will be getting yourself into . i bought my rig 1/2 assed built and had to tear it apart and rebuild it to my specs . im not even close to where i want it . im just getting it ready for the next run and them i might just build a buggy .

with the kids i would go with a 1st gen 4runner and cage it with 5point harnesses . you can find some sweet deals on ebay for the toyotas . after buying mine and rebuilding it i have about 4k in it . im looking to put another 3k in it and it will be done for a while i hope

Lot's of good advise but so many different ideas but i was expecting this because like all hobby's you have all good people from different sides.

Like bigevil said "with the kids" and yes i do have them and would love to go out and just have a fun day or even the whole weekend. So i will be looking into a 1st gen 4runner to pack them into. And i will definitely take you up on the invite to see your rig.

The only thing that sucks about buying a setup rig is the damage to your pride. You will be surprised how many people will be looking it over and tell you how good of a job you did building. Unfortunately you have to break the news to them that some of it isn't your work. IT SUCKS.

I understand where your coming from. I have 3 kids and I used to drag race but not a lot of fun for the kids with all the waiting around under the hot sun and hot concrete. So changed my hobby to wheeling and the kids love it. You get to go play in the mud and rocks, barbecue, go camping, meet new people, and enjoy the outdoors. This is a great hobby for someone with kids. I have had a bunch of offroad vehicle but the best are SUV's if you have kids so there is room for all of them plus gear and ice chest. Ford Explorers are really capable rigs just need to straight axle the front the rear has an 8.8 that is pretty indestructable, 4 Runners are great also, or go with a Blazer. Just get out there and have fun. And buy a truck and wheel it and slowly build it up and upgrade everytime you break something.

i agree with jeff ive you have kids buy an suv more room for the kids, jeep cherokees are nice starting platforms as well straight axle and can be upgraded fairly cheap and easy, and the ford explorer is a nice choice as well four door with lots of power out of the 4.0 but like he said straight axle is a must. heres mine and a cherokee i built

That was jeepkings rig that he built himself. While I can't say anything about how the whole rig is built, if you have a problem with the rig/fab work contact jeepking or start a post related to just that. Pretty chickenshit to keep seeing comments about poor fabwork in different posts. No reason to beat around the bush if there is a problem. Not trying to be a dick but jeepking has been a friend of mine for over 10 years, and he is a good guy. Like I say, in no way am I vouching for how any part of the rig is assembled, just saying if there is a problem, just come out and say it and get it resolved.
