Cool new guy with pics (finally!)

thought I'd post this in the Dallas area forum since there hasn't been much activity in here in a while

so here she is, my '86 K5. picked it up off CL back in December '09. I will definately admit, I paid way to much. long story short, I didn't do enough homework and I thought I knew more about the K5 market than I did *and* I bought it sight-unseen based on the opinion/evaluation of my brother-in-law. big rookie mistakes, but I'm moving on. some days I look at it and think it just needs to much to get it where I want it, then other days it doesn't seem that bad. already had to replace the fuel pump, starter and entire steering column. also replaced both front fenders and the hood. it needs a LOT more just to really even be road worthy much less trail ready - funny thing is, I drove it under it's own power all the way from Houston to Dallas and that was *before* I replaced anything! it was registered and used as a "Farm Truck" before I bought it. the old guy used it to haul cattle feed and tractor parts! the overall condition is consistant with a low budget "farm implement" - this is evident by the number of "repairs" done with actual bailing wire still, the darn thing starts everytime and I've already used it for several "dirty errands" that I didn't want to use my DD for. so enough with the blah, blah, blah...pictures are on Photobucket here:

skull crusher -

thanks for the complement on my K5 and a big thanks for those awsome pics! as for what my goals are...

I started getting seriously interested in the off-road world thanks a very good friend of mine (I think he's on here as "TXTJ") he and his father are hard core Jeep guys and bigtime into crawling. went out on the trails (Barnwell) a few times with him and I was hooked. That was 6 or 7 years ago. I've been searching for a Jeep to play with since then, but I finally decided on a K5 instead. I've always liked them (since I was a kid) and I've been tinkering on GM cars and trucks for nearly 24 years so I'm familiar with how GM puts a vehicle together, especially anything from the 80's.

ultimately, I'd like to "restore" it and mod. it just enough that I could drive it everyday if I needed or wanted to, but still be able to have fun with it on the rocks or in the mud. the '87 Buick in my sig has got to go. I don't want to sell it, but I've got considerable $$ tied up in it and we need the money to take care of some things on our house. I mention that because my plans for the Blazer will all be low-buck - no $6k engines, $5k paint jobs or $2k wheels for me I'll be putting the Buick up for sale within the next couple of months and then park the Blazer in the garage to start tearing into it. First priorities are safty and reliability issues - although I'd really like to pull some dents, get a straight rear bumper and have someone align those fenders better. I'd also like to get it all one color - even if that color comes form a rattle-can.

A ford would be a step from a jeep, if you end up getting a Chevy, you can have your man card back.

Hey Rob! It's been awhile since I've been on here or any other board for that matter...Don't get to frustrated, these things don't get built overnight, that is if you have to work for a living! Best thing you can do, is decide where you want to go before going there and having to "redo" things. And remember, If your garage gets a little small, I've always got a little extra room out here! I'll never forget you loaning out your garage to a complete stranger to see how someone get's a chunck of mesquite wood shoved up between a diff and diff cover! Besides, it's a little relaxing for me to turn wrenches on someone else's junk for a change!

Hey, you saved my ***** those many years ago! So no I won't quit bringing it up, For that I am eternally gratefull, just hope I can return the favor. This last weekend I build a new (to me) welding table out of a bunch of scraps I had laying around, turned out pretty good for what it is...I was sitting there welding 3' cut off sticks of angle together to get something long enough to use...I was given a 3'x7' piece of 3/16 plate several years ago that I used for the top. It is starting to look like a useable shop out here! You need to come by sometime, I'll make sure there are a few cold ones in the fridge!

ETA on the new rig: It should be wheelable by late August, Shake down will be something like Barnwell, but the real test will be mid September in Montrose, CO and Moab, UT! Can't wait! No posted pic's right now, I posted some of the old rig in the intro section many years ago...I guess I should at least update my sig...

hey cool! glad you found that thread. that was the *second* rig you've had since I met you and now you're about to complete your 3rd and already starting your 4th. yeah, you got it bad bud. I think you've got a classic case of "Awsome, I'm done!...time to sell it and build a bigger one!"

too bad your rig is in Tyler right now, my brother-in-law and his wife will be in town this weekend. he's been wanting to build a decent rig for a while now. after I bought the Blazer, he got the itch really bad and picked up an early 90's K10 truck cheap. let me know if you've got time for visitors this weekend and we'll come by to check out the shop.

Jeep and Yota guys can't handle full size rigs. They want to and put v8's and one tons under their rigs because they are scared to go over to the dark side...... Can't wait for my build to start up and get finished again....PAGING TXCHEVY18????????

MUDDSLINGER, I don't know what you are implying with the above statement, but I'm not one of those "my ______ is better than your _____" guys. I've owned full size rigs in the past, and will wheel with anybody that is fun to hang with and can keep up. When I build a rig, I build it for a purpose...is the V8 needed? Not at all, geared right, the old straight 6 hasn't had any trouble keeping up. I would much rather have a fuel injected 4.0 over a carb'd 305 any day! The V8 in a Jeep just adds a coolness factor more than anything! The one ton comment? I don't think a 10 bolt comes close to 1 ton duty and I haven't seen very many people with moded cheby's keep there 10 bolts, were all cut from the same cloth here, I just happen to love my Jeep, you your full size. Rob can attest, I was very happy for him the day he picked up his K5.

Rob, We'll be around this weekend, would love to hang out! Besides, you haven't seen the Scrambler yet and your Brother in law can cut his teeth on that one. It is already sitting on 4" springs and 35's, Although I just sold the engine/tranny out of it. Man an AMC 360 is one UGLY engine!
