02 Dodge dually diesel

my mileage has went way down in my dually, I am thinking it is the converter not locking up but am open to other suggestions. a couple of years ago towing to trees it was getting 17 MPG, last year when I went I don't remember but we had to stop and put gas in Ryan's Chevy more than we did my truck. then last year on the way to Crawford Ranch it dropped to 8 MPG, I thought it was a fluke but been watching it and took a trip to Dallas last weekend and it was 8 MPG still. when I don't have the trailer on it shows to be around the 20 MPG mark, hook up the trailer and it goes downhill.
any thoughts or suggestions?
thanks

changes?

Any changes in your speed or rpm? If the convertor isn't locking, you should see a higher rpm at your cruising speed.

Do you have a pyro on that truck? I had a boost leak on mine, didn't show it until I had a load on the motor to get to 45 psi (towing only)

You showed up to Crawford with the bed of your truck filled to the brim. Have you cleaned it out since then?

I'm going to assume you don't have a check engine light? I have a scanner just drive 130 miles I'll plug it in and we'll see if the computer tells us anything. LOL

Do you know anyone with a scanner? Quick test -The converter is easy to check get her up to speed then just lightly touch the brake peddle watch the tack it should move a couple hundred RPM. You should also be able to hear the differance.

I have cleaned it out and loaded it back down several times since then. for the record on the Dallas trip all I had in the bed was 2 trailer spares and 2 33's I was taking to a girl I know in Dallas.

Three key strokes should bring the codes up on your odometer

Used this to get codes when the VP44 died on my dads '01. He had bad fuel mileage for about 2yrs. Then one day it just wouldn't start anymore. It had one of the old chips on it that taps the IP wires. New VP44 and Hypertech tuner got him 4-5mpg.

What are your RPMs at 70mph? Are you hand calculating the mileage or going by the lie-o=meter?
