1989 K5 TBI 350 Problems

I have had the Blazer now for about 3 weeks. I love it even though it is running horrible. The problem is that it will idle in park but not in Reverse, or Drive. It also puts out a good amount of black smoke. When I drove it down the road and gas choked it, it looked like a badass diesel. I have changed the CTS Sensor, O2 Sensor, Plugs, TCM (for temp gauge), checked EGR and looks fine, and check the injectors and they look to be spraying well. Could it be the MAP or IAC? Please give me some advice. Thanks for the help...

Check the injectors while it is running and make sure its a nice even spray pattern on each side, there's 2 coolant temp sensors, one on the side of the head for the gauge and one on the intake for the ecu. I'm assuming you changed the one on the intake. you can try unhooking the vacuum line to the map sensor and plugging it to see if that makes a difference, you can also unhook the electrical plug to the map sensor to see how it runs, if it runs better with the map unhooked then you may have a bad map sensor. If you ever make it to houston, I have a spare map sensor you could try out. I kind of doubt it is the iac, normally they will cause it to idle up and down, then they will throw a code. Has the check engine light came on?

I work in La Porte. I will try those things. Yes it has thrown a code but not a IAC or MAP sensor code. How much do you want for the MAP sensor? Where is the other CTS? I check the injectors and they seemed to be spraying fine. Does the throttle body need to be cleaned? This is my first TBI motor. Also, the plug wires need to be replaced because it was arcing off on the block, maybe that is one reason why it is running bad. Thanks for the help.

Have you checked the TPS (throttle position sensor)?

After my little experience with them, I'd suggest pulling the line off the EGR and seeing if it runs any better. That little bit made a huge difference on mine, and even with the replacement part on there, the motor runs better with it unhooked.

The cts that you need to change is one that is on the intake manifold right by the thermostat housing. I wasn't really wanting to sell the map sensor, but you are welcome to borrow it and see if it fixes your problem.

I dont think it is the TPS (others buddies have told me that), I have checked the EGR by pushing up on the diaphragm and it killed the truck as it should and also disconnecting the EGR and it ran the same so I dont think it is the EGR. I will just go by the MAP sensor and see if that works. Thanks for the ideas and please keep them coming.

If you haven't already, change the temp sensor on the intake by the thermostat housing. When they go bad they think it is some like -50 degrees and cause it to flood the engine out.

Who rebuilds engines for a cheap price in the Houston/ Beaumont area? I am in need of getting mine rebuilt/ replaced. #1 cylinder has ZERO compression.
