1997 powerstroke tow rig build!!!

i figured i'd tell ya'll about my dads tow rig i've been building on a budget for the last couple of years. it is a 1997 ext cab 4wd 7.3l/e40d. he bought this truck to pull a 36ft 5th wheel camper.

the build:

the first thing to do on this truck was the trans. he pulled the camper a couple of times and the trans started acting funny, so we built the trans with all the goodies except upgrading the shafts. also added a huge trans cooler. this made the truck do much better, but then he decided it could use a little more go. (this was the most important upgrade)

number 2 on the list was a programer. (big mistake) he got a superchip programer. it helped the truck out alot on safe tow, but when put on higher settings it pretty much sucked for towing. (this truck is for towing not racing!) at this point the it got 18mpg driving empty, which was the same as stock.

the 3rd on the list was and exhaust system. i found a turbo back exhaust on e-bay for $225. it has a 3.25" down pipe and the rest is 4". its all aluminized mandrell bent pipe. it came with a cat delete pipe, a straight through silverline muffler, and 5" polished tip. i highly recommend this system it was super easy to install and sounds great. this system made more power by itself than the programer. it got 19mpg after this with the programer on safe tow.

next was the homemade 6637 air filter. nothing too special, just a napa 6637 filter and fabbed up a hose and adapter for the filter. (removed all the old junk). 19.25 mpg now!

then it needed some guages to keep an eye on everything and to help decide what was going to be next on the list. autometer trans temp, pyrometer, boost, and coolant temp were orders from barnetts in atlanta (where he lives) boost maxxed out at 14psi while towing with egt's never going over 1000*F.

these numbers told us we needed more boost. but before we took care of that, i came across a great deal on an intercooler. it wasn't anything exciting just a stock 7.3l superduty unit, and it came with the piping and the spider for only $100!!! now egt's stay under 900*F. oh yeah 19.5mpg. it towed the camper pretty good too but steep his kicked its butt. IT NEEDED MORE BOOST!

this lead to what i just installed over the holidays, a new factory turbo i got from lil' MONSTER for $150! (thanks again!) and a quick spooling 1.0 turbine housing. this was the best upgrade so far. it makes 15psi driving empty, the most before driving empty was 7psi. he hasn't towed anything yet but i'm guesing it will hit 22-24psi. when cruising 70mph it has 7-8psi and 80mph 12-13psi. it is much more responsive and has gobbs more power! he drove it 175 miles today and reported 21.8mpg driving 70mph. his first words when he called me were: Wow! this thing is amazing! lol. he's going to haul a bunch of sidewalk bricks in the near future i'll give an update of his reaction then.

next on the list is a custom tuned TS style chip. everyone say's they are the "cream of the crop" for his truck. so we'll see. they are pricey so he needs to sell the superchip to help fund the new chip. i'll let ya'll know when more things are done to it!

Very cool sounds like your doing a great job. I've been told 22lbs of boost is about all that engine will take constantly. The block (cylinder walls) will stretch if you push it to hard to long. I've got a 99 7.3 with a Bully Dog and it will produce 44lbs of boost on level 4 (Only usable for short bursts). I don't get near the fuel mileage you do wish I did.

all the 7.3l longblocks are the same. the differences are the hpop, the injectors, the idm, intercooler, and the turbo. the turbo's are almost identical, but the 99-03 had a wastegate. you might look at a ts style chip instead of the bullydog. i'll probably set up a live tune session with tony wildman for him, if i can find enough people in the atlanta area that are interested.

i forgot to mention that there is no black smoke on his truck! black smoke equals wasted fuel. i bet your bullydog makes good power but it probably rolls the coals too. i wonder what your egt's are? tony's chips are tuned for what you want your truck to do. and you can get up to 16 positions on a chip.

your truck has alot more power potential than a 97. it has 160cc injectors and a 17* hpop. the worlds fastest powerstroke is a 7.3L!!!

I've had my truck since 2001 and don't plan on selling any time soon. I would sure like to get some more mpg out of it.

The Bully Dog was $600.00, changing it out for something else would sting a bit but if I could like I said get some better MPG I would consider it.

I normally drive around in stock mode, unless the trailers hooked, then it's on stage (2) tow. I bump it up just on rare occasions just to feel the power or maybe a little race from one light to the next.

Mine doesn't smoke much not like some I have seen.

google "tony wildman chip reviews", click on the 1st one and scroll down to the bottom. dp tuner is another good place to get one. the chips are $199 plus 35-50 bucks per tune.

22.5 MPG yesterday driving 68mph on a 200 mile trip. my dad is stoked!!! it needs new front leaf spring so the ts chip will have to hold off for a while. the springs are sagged so bad, it only has about 3/4" till the bumpstops. some 5600lb f350 springs are on the way. does anyone have any stock f350 blocks that came off a square body truck? they should be 3.5"

i would look into upgrading to the 99+ style intercooler and converting from hot air. All you would need is the cac pipes, the spider and the intercooler if memory serves me right. I might even have that stuff sitting around...

Also between a wildman tune or a tipton tune (dp tuner) you cant go wrong. I have a question though, why didnt you go with the 3.5 dp? And wouldnt adding blocks to the 250's ifs be a pain in the arse as far as alignment goes?

the superduty intercooler is already installed.

the f350 front springs only bring it up 1" from stock. the f250 blocks are 2.5" vs the f350 3.5" so it shouldn't have any alignment issues.

the 3.25 downpipe has more capacity then the turbine outlet so 3.5 is unneccesary, plus fitting a 3.25 is a little easier to fit.
