32 SM465 questions

So i did some searching and i still can find he answer i am looking for. Anyway here is goes.

1.) I am going to be swaping in a 32 spline SM465/208 combo inplace of my 10 spline sm465/205 combo. Will i be able to use my same rear drivesahft or will i need to get the length changed?

2.) Down the road when i want to swap in a 32spline 205 inplace of my 208, will i be able to use the same adapter?

3.) Does anyone know the lengths for these combonations? I cant find he lengths anywhere...

Thanks in advance.

I think you are gonna regret putting a 208 in there.......ask Mudgod.

Save yourself some downtime and either put the 32 spl 205 in from jump street or leave it alone.

I run a BBC- doubler & 42s......The 4spd/205 adaptor gave out on me & one time i stripped the splines in the 10 spl coupler.

Both before the doubler was installed. Id stick with the 205 over the 208,even if the 205 only had 3 splines

^ his 465 is popping out of 2nd, that's why he's doing the swap.

If it were me, I would just fix the tranny that you have with the 2wd 465 that you said you have and call it good.

the 465/208 combo is longer than your current setup. I can measure for you this weekend and get 465/205 and 465/208 lengths if you want, as I have both combos.

If you need a 32 spline 208 let me know, I'll sell you the one I have.

I pretty sure the adapter from the 465/208 is different than the 465/205 32 spline. I could be wrong though.

Mudskipper4x4, If you wouldnt mind i would really appreciate those lengths.

Is it that hard to swap mainshafts over? I kinda worried that if/when i open up the tranny that i have that i am going to find out that its worse than i thought. If its not hard then i may just do it.

I know you guys are prolly tired of my back and forth with this. I just cant figure out what is the best thing to do.

As for the the 208 i appreciate it but Fourwheeler jeff s going to bring me a 32spline sm465 and 208 combo.

That I don't know and I wish I had one of those to measure. Sorry I only have the 10 spline version to measure with a 205.

You are going to have to mod your driveshafts if you go to a 208 if that's why you are asking for the lengths.

Damn, i just had the rear driveshaft built too. I guess i am going to try and swap mainshafts on the 2 trannys tommorow? Is it as easy as just takeing one out and putting it in the other or do i need to get things pressed on and off?

Alright I am kinda in the same boat here. Currently my truck has a 10 spl 465/205 combo with mechancal linkage, I also have a completely rebuilt 32spl 465 with all hydro parts and a 208 slip yoke. I was leaning towards the 32 spline 465/208 combo for the lower gearing. I have another 208 from a th350 setup that I can use for parts when something breaks.

What parts typically break on the 208? To those who say don't go with the 208 is this from experience? How often where you breaking 208's? Sorry for the 20?'s but I'm just trying to get all my info together so I can make the best choice.

Rig will be a truggy on 42's with 5.86 gears if it helps.

I think the slip yoke and chain is what scare people away from them. That and the aluminum case.

I hate these conversations.

A. 10 spline and 32 spline SM465's are the same length.

B. NP205's have unique adapters, both figure 8 and 6 round pattern. They have a notch cut out at the 3 o-clock position to accommodate the shift levers. A NP208 will bolt but leak.

C. Stop bashing the 208. It's not a bad t-case and has earned a false reputation.

D. If you have a 208, run it. If you want to do a swap, do a NP241. 6 planetary gears vs 3 in the 208, 2:72:1 gear ratio, and it is tested to handle 5555 ft/lbs of torque before failure.

E. NP208 and 241 are similar in length and are longer than a 205.

I can go on, but I'll have to add later. I'm late for class...

Those aluminum slip yoke t-cases will take a lot of abuse, as long as the rig isn't lifted too high. As you raise the truck, the angle of the driveshaft increases, raising the amount of side loading that the output shaft sees. This side loading also decreases the ability of the slip yoke to actually slip. Under just the right conditions, the side load can bind the slip yoke just as the rear suspension is compressing. The driveshaft MUST move forward as the rear diff comes up. If there isn't any slip available in the shaft, the pressure exceeds what the t-case housing can deal with and you hear (and feel) a loud, expensive noise come from under your rig...

a 205 will not bolt to the 208 adapter, its just a little too short.

If you run the 208 just make sure you use the torque arm that bolts from the bellhousing to the tcase to keep it from flexing the alum housing. And make sure you run a good skid plate too.

I don't have the torque arm or know what it looks like. What purpose does it serve?

Keeps the t-case from twisting. It bolts onto the right side of the t-case and it goes up to the bell housing of the transmission. Most folks have taken theirs off and tossed it. I haven't seen any in any bone yards either...

Its just a solid rod that has a 90* at one end with a hole in it to bolt to the bell housing and the other end is flat with two holes in it to bolt to the side of the tcase.

Basically it adds triangulation into the setup to keep the front output from torquing and breaking the housing or adapter.

Hmmm, now that you reminded me of that, I think I need to have something made for my t-case. Sounds like a winner there. Thanks!

I'm finally finishing up the swap of my sm465 with hydro clutch and have a final question. Does the chevy slave cylinder use s small plastic spacer that goes inbetween the slave and where it mounts to the bell housing ? Fords use this and I was not sure if chevy did as well?

If so does anyone know where to locate that spacer? Local parts store?

Thanks in advance.
