355 Sbc With A Nasty Miss

I have a 1979 SBC 350 punched .60 that used to be a pretty hot motor making about 400 to 425 HP but lately its been running like crap. It has a slight miss at idle but you can really hear it when you put your foot into it the more RPMs the worse it sounds.... it sounded to me like it had a bad miss so i replace plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil and nothing changed... i found TDC of number 1 cylinder and made sure all the plug wires were correct and timed.... i adjusted the valves the best that i could and still nada.... now i need help, if anyone has any advice or knows what could cause this i would appreciate the input THANKS

I would start by pulling plug wires off at the cap and try to find the miss. Do a compression test. Also look for a flat cam lobe (pull valve cover and make sure all rockers are moving the same amount) and if all that passes try replacing the module in the dist.

I would start by de-activating the MSD system and them troubleshoot with the supercoil and everything else besides the msd box. In that case since you won't have such a hot spark either your miss will show up more or maybe less... Good luck.

Could also be a collapsed lifter.

If it is a flat cam you better pull the whole engine and go through it. The metal off the cam usually takes out the bearings also.

The lifter/cam would also be my first thoughts, barring any obvious compression or spark issues.

My personal experience would lead me to check the #2 intake lifter first .

give the module a check or you can pick one up aftermarket at your local parts store for around 30 bucks i wanna say. if its still doin that i had a stroker i built with a nasty cam in it, of course i was impatient and didnt break it in right and about 3 months down the road one of the exhaust lobes balded and it would miss/hessitate/etc pretty much run like S***. slapped a fresh cam and took my time and she is still runnin like a champ as we speak.

Check your intake and carburetor gaskets. My 396 had a tear in the top of the driver side intake gasket, and it was letting lots of air into number 3 cylinder. I had been playing in a pond, and water got on top of the motor. It sat there, and soaked the gasket until the engine sucked a section out of it.
