383 starter???

ok this is the 3rd stroker ive built and im just now runnin into this, usually i build them for my truck with sm465, this time its for a 4l60e for my brother, i used a 400 sbc crank, so i asked napa for a flexplate for that, ok everthing is fine, now i put the starter on it and it crank 2 or 3 times and pop, it kicked and broke the head off the starter, it sounded like it wasnt getting good contact, now i put a bbc starter on it and it sounds too close, but even after i shim it, it does not sound right. any one ever ran into this before? i either have the wrong starter (s) or flexplate.

did you install the factory brace on the back of the starter?

either reinstall that brace that brace will keep the starter nose from walking out off the flywheel or go with a gear reduction starter. I have had problems with after market flywheels and rebuilt starters too, they use cheap Chinese nose cones that are not spec-ed out right.

I always use mini gear reduction starters on my 383-406 small blocks.

Ive found that a factory starter from a 98ish Tahoe is a gear reduction starter from the factory and works quite well. I have one on my 10 :1 sbc. They run about $120 w/o a core and lifetime warranty.
