What do you guys think I should set my redline at on my 396 big block? I am going TB injection on a stock 68 396.

My 402(same as 396) met its demise in a snow covered field,turning somewhere around 5k. It was tired & its time had come. So its hard to say.

The latest 396 I built has all cast parts and shift point is 6200. It could go further, but in order to keep it together for many years to come, there's no point. The TBI will be the hold back for it, in my opinion. If you want it to last a long time, I'd say keep it under 5K.

Your motor may not reach above 4k, 5k. Depends on how it was built, roller rockers(less drag) timing gears, cam, crank scraper.....etc. Not all motors are created equal! Not all motors will hit 8k. The best thing to do would be to find the highest rpm your motor still makes torque and horse power (power band). Does no good to over shoot your power band.

i'd keep it at 5.....should be plenty of rpm unless your racing......heck my new freash 350 i keep it at 4500 at most no need to rev higher unless im just showing off.LOL.damn ricers!!!!!!!!

Depends on how the engine is built. A bigger cam will allow it to rev higher as will a freeflowing exhaust and intake. How well the rotating assemly is balanced also makes a big difference.

I have had my 454 up to 6k a couple times and 5.5k regularly. It's pretty much useless above 5 grand though. I really doubt that you will be able to get much more than that out of it anyway with a stock tbi system.

sounds like I should get my chip burned for 5K then, the motor is completly stock....it came out of a running truck with a knock and all I did was have the crank turned and new bearings. Evan....how did you like your 402? I was really disappointed when I found out my engine was a 396 and not a 454. Do they make desent power for what we do?

I believe the truck engines made either 300 or 350 hp stock. The car 396s made about 400 hp. I'm not sure what they had for torque. It should be plenty, and if it isnt it's not too hard to get more.

If you want lots of low end torque run a GMPP Marine cam. That's what I'm running in the K10. According to DT Dyno I should be making close to 350hp and 500 lbs. It's all stock except for the cam and intake. I'm hoping to get it to atleast 400hp with a good exhaust and some head work.

I wonder how that cam would work with the TB injection? I will wheel what i have for now but I was thinking for edelbrock 454 TB intake and a new cam later on.

keep me posted.....are you using a tb intake or an adaptor? all I need to find is a 454 TB and either an intake or adaptor and to get my chip reburned.

I never had trouble breaking 1/2 ton junk with 33s & my 402.

But........
It drank gas
it didnt like cold mornings(it was my DD)
drank gas
ran warm,untill I had a 4 core built
didnt like the highway & 4.10 gears

I got it running last night in open loop (no O2 or CTS). I'm having a problem with it just shutting down after a few minutes, but I think it may have to do with it running on 350 injectors. I'm going to swap in some 454 injectors this evening and see how it does. It runs great when it does run though, awesome throttle response. I havent gotten to drive it yet though, I still need to install the fuel pump in the tank, run fuel lines, and get the rest of the sensors so it'll run in closed loop.

What is that A flooded carb? or the smell of unburned gas coming from your exhaust?

Evan, do me a favor and don't break your stuff before I get mine running. No one I run with will climb with me. I hope to have everything buttoned up by April. Sucks not having a place to work on it anymore. I will be trying out the fuel injected BB. hydro clutch and my 38s. Think I will be able to get up Bull Taco then?

Well he upgraded to a D61 so atleast we don't have to worry about a tire flying through the windshield. Besides he is only running 400hp, I know small blocks with more than that.

I do have a stupid question....do big blocks use the same starter? This is my first BB

I dont have much to say other than.......I made it up the hill,without having to back out.

About that fender issue.....the other one looks ready to bail anytime. When that happens......
