4bt

Anyone on the bored have any experience with the 4BT motors? Looking at getting parts together for a swap not anytime soon but would like to know if its worth it. Like to know little things like the wiring and fuel, very hard swap? Thinks for the info

The builds I've scanned over made it seem pretty straight forward but for a heavy engine, it required some tweaking to make some decent power.

One wire to make em run. You can find them in bread trucks and stuff like that with GM autos on the back of them. TH475's I believe or maybe TH400. There cool little motors but heavy and REALLY tall compared to a normal 4 banger.

I didn't think they weighed anymore than a chevy 350? Thumper is right though, very tall. Clearanced oil pan maybe? Oh and when I was looking for those bread trucks they were going for way too much money. Frito lay was selling a ton of them at an online auction. Something "dove" can't remember.

4BT is about 745 lbs, SBC 575 lbs, and BBC 685 lbs. It's the same engine as a 5.9, but less two cylinders.

I was thinking about putting one in the Scout. It's about the same weight as the IH V8. I've pretty much decided to put on in my 80 GMC instead. Would make a good beater to run around in with good mileage and could still pull a decent size trailer.

See I'm sick of this pos 3.8 that's in it know, plus with the way the new computers are on these I can't run junkyard 60s. I seen a tj build where the Guy got 23mpg with 40s, hell that's a ton better then my factory mpg

Junkyard one ton axles, the computer works off the axles on the jk's. If there's no signal from the ABS seniors then the motor wont run properly.

Not sure that is right Dustin. I read a build were a guy test his jeep out for several months. He unhooked the sensors and it ran fine, shifted at the same pints and his MPG never changed. I will see if I can locate it.

As for the 4bt, if you use it for daily only, it might be okay but not sure it would be worth it. For the MPG the cost may be to much.

Well here is some math. If your getting 13 MPG now at $3.00 per gallon. You spending $.23 per mile. If you move up to 23 miles per gallon your saving $.10 per mile. The average jeep engine swap is about $3000 if you do it all your self. So at that cost your looking at driving that jeep on 40's 30,000 miles just to break even on the swap and 60,000 to double your money. I also have not included the extra cost for the tires, gears etc. That $3000 would do better elsewhere if MPG is your factor for the swap.

Isn't there a guy on the board that swapped in rockwells in his jk? Don't think he had any issues.

I don't know EXACTLY the weight but I will say my engine hoist DEFINATELY could tell the difference. I got my 4BTA from a Dorito Van from Dovebid.com with 88,000 miles and attached to a TH400 (mine had a BOP pattern though and not the GM pattern tranny). I picked mine up for 1600 but it seems like their popularity has driven the auction prices up a bit.
That would be sweet in a JK though. I kinda wish I'd gone ahead and done the swap but I went with the 5.3 vortec so mine is tucked away in the corner until another Jeep comes home.

The 4bts weight is around 700lbs. Pretty close to the weight of a 454.

The weight doesn't bother me much, just want more power and some tons. Thought about going with a 5.3 but I'm already sick of wiring on this flatty, hate to imagine the amount of wiring that swap would take.
