700R4 Problem

Okay, So i think the tranny is going out in my blazer but im not sure. I just rebuilt the rear end so that could be the problem(since i have never done it before) but to me it sounds like it coming from tranny or t-case area. So here is the problem. When i am accelerating it sound fine but when i let of the pedal and am just coasting i start to here a grinding sound. When i push the gas again it goes away. It only seems to do it in third or fourth gear so thats what makes me think its the tranny.

So what i need is some suggestions on how to figure out what is wrong. I am fixen to pull the drive shaft and rotate the pinion by hand to see if the noise is just some slop that can be fixed by adjusting the the ring gear.

If it turns out that the tranny is bad im still in good shape because i have the sm465 that i was going to swap in anyway but i really hope thats not the case. School starts Monday and i wont have much time to work on it after.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Check your pinion bearing prelaod. Could be a problem with the bearing that takes load during "coast". The "third or fourth gear" thing could just be related to speed.

Okay, so tonight i pulled the diff. cover and re adjusted the ring gear. While on stands and the cover off i had my dad use the brakes and slowly let the wheels rotate. I have come to the conclusion that it is not the ring gear or pinion because the pattern is damn near perfect. Anyway, i am back to my original thought that it is either the trans or t-case. Any suggestions on how locate the problem?

How does the truck drive ?
Does it shift smoothly into all gears ?
Whats the trans fluid look like ?

As for the t-case check that its shifting thru the ranges good.
Check the linkage to make sure its not in a bind.
Bad motor mounts or t-case mount can let it torque up.

It could also be worn shift fork pads in the t-case (208/241).
Check the level & condition of the fluid in the t-case.

It sounds like when you brake your pinion is rotating down and causing the u-joints to bind and vibrate. My k5 did the same thing, as long as you were giving it throttle it would hold the pinion up enough and be smooth, let off the throttle or hit the brakes and it would chatter bad.

I think if something was wrong with the tranny you would be having other issues as well.

Meant to reply to this the other day.

I found out that my transfercase was running on about a quart of fluid when it needed about 4.5. So the t-case i think is gone. I am having to drive it like it is for now because i am out of money but as soon as i get some cash i am going to go ahead and swap in my sm465/205 combo.

Thanks for your help.

you still need to keep a close eye on your pinion and ruch sleevr etc. i did the same thing on a 10 bolt i used to run with stock tires, i rebuilt the rear-end and dialed it in perfect but after i put a few miles on it the pinion nut worked it's way loose and the grinding was the pinion eating my carrier i strngley recomend when you are reassembling use red lock-tite
