700r4 won't upshift

1983 Chevy K10 305/700r4/np208

Shifter works fine. Goes into drive smooth, reverse is wonderful.

Problem: Won't upshift out of first gear.

Any advice? I -think- it is the governor gear, but I don't know where that is, or how to access it to check to see if it is bad. Can someone point me in the right direction of this? pictures would be VERY helpful.

Also, I have read something about a tv cable mod, or something like that, which is suppose to help with power. I'm still researching that, but if that could be explained too, that would be wonderful.

Thank you all in advice. This is a fantastic site. I have learned alot from you guys already, even though I don't post much.
-Brandon

Drive slow and you'll never notice.

Try adjusting the tv cable. Here's a pretty good article of how to do it. http://www.thirdgen.org/detent

On a v8 the tv cable will hook to the carb/tbi on the bottom of the throttle lever just below the acc. cable. The bracket that holds the adjuster and cable should be located on the rear of the intake.

Eh. I think it is going to need to be rebuilt/replaced. I tried the TV cable thing, and it didn't work. I also checked the governor gear, and it looks brand new. I guess it is time to start savin' my pennies, and pimping myself out for quarters. One good thing though, is that I'll just save up my money for a crate 350, and get it all done at the same time.

The springs in the govenor have a bad habit of sticking, which will cause it to not shift out of first. Take the gear off, pull it all apart and clean it real well. Take care doing this as the gear is more than likely plastic or nylon and will break easily when re-installing the roll pin. I had a brand new 700 act up on me and once I cleaned the govenor, it never gave me problems again. The 700's are very picky and don't like the TV cable/pressures messed with. Re-adjusting the tv cable to bandaid another issue will quickly burn up clutches. I know that route all too well.

I'll try this, thanks. Should I clean it with deisel, or gas, or just a good wipedown?

I've always used and had good luck with brake parts cleaner. It works great for everything.

I tried cleaning it. I think its official. My transmission is dead. Time to start saving my pennies. I guess this will come before buying and swapping in a 350.
