89 jeep wrangler YJ man to auto

What is required to swap a maunal tranny to an auto. My manual tranny is fried and my buddy has a automatic outta a late 80 jeep cheerokee . Same motor as mine 6cyl. Is it possible. I was hoping I could just swap the flywheel or something like tht. Its just a river ride .only gonna see dirt .no pavement. Kinda figured I could just rig a shbifter coming threw the floor if it is even compatible. . Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can. Just need the flywheel and converter. Is it a computer controlled auto? You will have to have the computer, i think? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I think you can also use it with out the computer and it would be like a manual valve body.

There is several different transmission used in the late 80's. Need to know more of what it is.

Try these:

Your 89 is carb'd correct? If the tranny is the AW4 it is computer controlled and if you want it to run as an auto you need to give the computer the correct input from a TPS. Of course your carb doesn't have this sensor. Your other choice is to run a stand alone controller like the one from AW4 shifting (google). This will give you full manual control of the tranny. Of course if you decide to swap in a latter 4.0l fuel injection system you can hook the tranny up give it the input it needs and you have a true auto. I went with option #2 and put a 4.0 in my 88 then put the AW4 in. Wired it up and love it.

If it is puegot stay away from it. The TF904 and TF999 are good swaps. No computer needed and strong.
