98' cummins swap into my 96 chevy mud truck questions?.

my chevy is a c2500, it has a 5.7 and 4l80e. it has 5 ton rockwells, divorced np205 and 53in michelins. the 5.7 does alright but it limits me. So i picked up a 98 12 valve. With the parts im putting on it i plan to see around 450hp and 800 ftlbs.
my questions are about what tranny i should run? i want to stay with an auto, so will my stock 4l80e work....or should i sell it for a built th400...any opinions will be considered

You can use the 4l80 but you will have to convert it to full manual with a transgo kit and then either set the pressure static or rig up a vaccum modulator to control line pressure. I built on like this and used a modulator from a 6.5T from a 90's truck. I think they call it a vaccum control valve or something on the parts list. I mounted it off the front cover area and used a linkage to the pump linkage. It was a little tricky to setup but worked really well.

the power steering pump on the 12 valve has a vaccum pump that i could use. will the stock 4l80 hold the power of the 12 valve. My thinking is that it being in the mud and turbo power...the trans will have an easier time with it?

very interested in the built 400. What would i need to make that tranny work behind the 12valve. by built what all has been done, and who built it. would it come with a converter, flywheel etc?

Either transmission will need an engine plate and flywheel from either a bread van or an aftermarket vendor. The bread van setups are hard to find buy usually cheaper at around $600 for a nice complete on with starter. At least that is what they were a few years ago. Aftermarket setups are over 1000 unless a new one has popped up recently. This is the main reason most people build dodge trannys.

Got to be careful with the bread van adaptors. Most of them were for the BOP bolt pattern 400's and the chevy trannys won't actually work. I just bought the aftermarket setup for mine and I think it was around $1100 and I still have to get a starter, but mine is a street rod so I wanted a good chevy 4l80e trans behind it for durability. And well my 4l80e isn't anywhere near stock either which helps it survive...lol!

I am not familiar with the BOP pattern but I assume that is the one with the integrated pan mount. I used one of those with my 4l80 along with the flywheel and just built a piece to fit the bottom and the top 6 holes bolted up.

It was built to hold a big block in my Trans Am race car. (750hp plus a shot of nitrous) Heavy duty bands and clutches. I have a 3500rpm stall or stock converter for it. Trans Care built it a few years ago. It has been in storage for awhile but is ready to run

4L80 has been said to have internals good to 1000lb but I have to think that is the ragged edge. You will need a valve body rework, added clutches and other standard heavy duty upgrades on any of them. As for spooling , a 12 valve in that power range will be laggy and you will have to power brake it for a bit to get boost up if you want it to launch hard. Id want something much better than a stock convertor for that. Goerand brothers are argueably the best.

It has a slip yoke rear. Just need a drive shaft to your 205

Get a 727 that was behind a 89-early 91 non intercooled cummins Dodge truck. Same internals as a gasser 727 so tons of aftermarket support for them.

I tend to agree on the 727 for ease of install and cost savings. "Common Rail Turbo" is like saying "35 inch tires"; they ain't all created equal. I will assume you mean the early common rail before they were electronic controlled?

patc 727 Mopar Transmission from PATC
makes a performance 727 for decent price. would this be the best and easiest way to go? will it hold?

I think your confused.... No electronic wastegate but the newer HE 351VE has variable vanes, what you want is a HE351cw off of a 04.5-07 common rail it a fixed vane unit... Ive got one sitting in a box waiting to go on my 91 should be bad ***

Oh yeah you can use the HE351VE but you just have to figure out a way to either lock the vanes or control it without the computer

I have no clue which eh351 it is. I know for sure it came off of an 05 common rail..i saw it blow and help take it off my buddies truck. I sent it to majestic turbo out of waco. So with it being an 05 majestic just needs to rebuild it and when i get it back throw it on?

Im really at a loss with the hole trans issue. I have no clue which one i should use to hold the power, be dependable, and affordable

if it came off a 05 you should be good to go...... as far as the trans goes if you use anything other than something that bolts directly behind the cummins your looking at least a grand for a adapter kit to make it work that might be something to think about if your on a budget, I Have A518 (46rh) that came out of my 91 model its non electronic so you wont need a computer to run it. I will sell it for 200 as a core its going to need a complete rebuild which is going to cost your around 2000 to build it up to handle the power you plan on

Visit CompetitionDiesel.com, there are a couple of guys that have built 727s to withstand over 700 rear wheel horsepower with no problems. IMO, anyway you go about it it is not going to be cheap to build an automatic up to withstand big HP.
