'98 ZJ 5.9 limited trans issue question

Last night out wheeling my trans just let go of all gears . Never slipped or skipped a beat all night , I go up a small crack stop for a second and when I went to move forward again I had nothing . No reverse just a gear box full of nuetral . Transfer case still shifts fine thru high and low and I've checked out everything external to make sure all wires and linkages were working properly .

Needless to say it pretty much sucked having to get towed out of some nasty trails . Anyone have any idea what might have happened , do pumps just go out like that or do I need to have it looked at by a transmission shop . Transmissions are not my specialty .

Thanks in advance

What transfer case?
If it's the one that comes stock then it's your t-case. The full time t-case. I've had a couple of friends that had them and they did the same thing. Put a 231 in it (direct swap with some linkage changes). That's if you don't already and if you do then it's the tranny and ignore my post.

It still has the factory Quadra Trac . You really think it could be the viscous clutch instead of the tranny ? I've never had one just burn up like that before . Guess the only way to know is to pull the t case , start the jeep and put in in a drive gear and see if the output spins .

That would be my first guess. Those are pretty good transmissions.
