Talking bbc 427 tall deck

hey guys just picked up a reman. crate 427 from gm its the tall deck block. i have some questions but dont have the patience for google lol.

1. will i need to get a tall deck distributer or will the standard work?

2. are the intake spacers worth it? or am i better off getting the tall deck intake for 250.00 more bucks?

3. it didnt come with balancer or flywheel, do i get a neutral balance setup or what?

4. i am wanting to do a solid roller setup, always ran hydraulic so im not used to this, what are the specs with a feeler gauge i needa crank the rockers down to? " i havent got a cam yet but i dont plan on going over .600 lift.

thanks in advance guys

If you use a stock TD intake or aftermarket made for a TD there is no need for a different distributor. If you use a intake for a regular BBC and spacers then you need a longer distributor. I am not 100% sure but fairly sure the TD is internally balanced. I used the flywheel and PP from a 396, 454s are different. If it was remaned back to stock the heads have tiny valves and it has the 4 ringed pistons in it good for 4500 redline.

I really don't think your going to be take advantage of a intake and those rectangular port heads. 4K on a tall deck is pushing it with those huge 4-ring pistons. Now you could always go in there and put car 427 pistons with 0.40 longer rods and be able to rev to 6-7k.

oh definately, i trashed the 4 ringers and went with kb .060 over with just some scat rods, this is a full solid roller motor. i hope to be turning at least 6k if i put my foot into it.

You need a Flywheel and Balancerfor a 396 to 427. Technically a SBC (except 400) flywheel will work too.

All V8 SBC and BBC are Internal balance EXCEPT a SB400 and BB454. The 400 and 454 have thier own Flywheels and Balancers.

The part numbers you need (I love to go into the parts stores already knowing the part numbers, and see if the counterman come up with the same thing)

Pioneer PN: FW-100
Pioneer PN: DA-427

These are part #s for 2 PIECE rear main engines. If yours is a late model 1 piece they will be different.

P.S. I have some TD427 parts if you need any. (Flywheel, stock intake, and stuff. No balancer though.)in Amarillo.

Awesome thanks for the info on the flywheels. I'm getting down do the bare minimums and the motor should be done. I broke down and just got a 454 intake and moroso spacers and just had my machine shop match the ports to gaskets to spacers hopefully that will work well.

You will have to use a special distributor. That's the bad thing about the intake spacers.

If you run a stock TD intake, or one made for a TD you can use the plain ol' Chevy distributors. They are made with lower distributor mounts.

When you use the spacers on a low deck intake, you are also raising the distributor too. So you will need a "longer" distributor.

Ya that was my only complaint was I had to buy a new distributor but I found msd pro billit has a slip collar that should do the trick. An I had hell tryin to find a intake for tall deck with dual plane high rise like I wanted to run. I ended up gettin the edelbrock rpm air gap
