Cam selection for 350 sbc

Okay, so i think i have narrowed it down between 2 cams i would like to run.

Comp Cams #249-CL12-235-2
Xtreme 4x4 X4254H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft & Lifter Kit
Lift: .447''/.462''
Duration: 254/262
RPM Range: 1000-5200

Comp Cams #249-K11-235-3
Xtreme 4x4 X4262H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft Complete Kit Kit
Lift: .505''/.515''
Duration: 262/270
RPM Range: 1400-5400

I am leaning more towards the x4262h because i am hoping for a little bit of lope at idle but not to much.

Also i just noticed that on the comp cam website the 262 cam says it has .462 and .48 lift specs and the jegs site says .505/.515. im not sure which one to belive.

If anyone has any other cam suggestions i would love to here them.

Also, if anyone knows of a website or something that would teach me how to read cam specs to understand what they will do at idle i would really appreciate that.

I've run the 262 before and I really liked it. It made tons of mid range power, which worked great in the sand. It worked nicely with about a 1500 rpm stall on an auto. It doesn't "lope", but you can tell that it's not stock. I wouldn't get into the rough idle mentality, pick something that makes power where you want it. Bigger is not always better when choosing a cam.

The only thing i was really worried about is that the 262 cam would lope to much. I am looking to have great low end torque with some nice hp numbers but would rather have more torque low.

When i said little lope i mean that i want to be able to tell its not stock but at the same time not kill my low end.

So will this cam do that for me? x4262h

It should work well. I ran it with 2.76 gears and 33s for a while and it still ran good. It made good low end torque, but it really picked up at about 2000 rpm and would run all the way up to 6000. It probably would've easily gone higher, but i had a small carb on it and didn't have it balanced. I was also running about 9.5 compression, headers, and performer intake with stock smog heads.

A good set of heads, bigger carb, and a better intake would've really woke it up.

If you want to see what different cams will do get a copy of Desktop Dyno and learn how to use it. It's not exact on power numbers, but it will get you close and give you a real good idea what different cam profiles will do to your power curves.

yeah I use the desktop dyno too, handy tool and fun to screw around with.
The best thing to do in my honest opinion is to call the cam company. Comp cams has great support and they are experts at chosing the right cam for your application. Most major cam companies have a program that with the right input will put you spot on at getting the most out of what you have. when you call be ready to answer some questions, such as total wieght of vehicle, detailed engine specs, what gears, what tire size, what trans and maybe some more I forgot.
I have never actually used the tech department at Comp Cams but I have heard it is very good.
The guy I use is Tom at Erson cams, I have not talked to him in several years but he was da man for a killer custom matched grind. http://www.pbm-erson.com/contact-us.php Give him a call if ya want and if nothing else he can tell you exactly what range cam will do what you want.

Cant say about the tech people, but their customer service was really good a few years ago. My first cam went flat. It was out of warranty by a month or two, they said to send it in anyway. The guy looked it over and said it looked like it was starved for oil and wasn't the cam's fault. He still sent me a new one, even after saying it wasn't their problem and being out of warr. anyway.

alright, I will give them a call and see what they suggest.

I am planning on running a set of vortec heads and would like to not have to ddo anything to them other than a valve job and maybe and after martket set of springs if need.

Has anyone used vortec heads? What all need to be done on the heads to use a higher lift cam?

I am running the Lunati VOODOO 262 in my new engine. It just does have a little lope at idle. Makes great lowend power. This engine will light up the 39" pitbulls from a dead stop on concrete.
Good luck with your cam choice.

Yeah I have run the 268H before also, peppy down low and makes a 350 sound like it has a lil bit of a miss at idle. Good cam.
