sounds like the inlet needle valve is stuck open or the float level is set too high

Check for trash in needle seat... smallest piece of trash will do it.

Too much fuel pressure will do it. I had an AFB on my rig. Took it to Hot Springs Memorial Day weekend. I hated it. Anything other than flat. It would flood. Down hill it was starving for gas. I worked on it everynight I was there.
This past weekend at Trees I was running a Truck Avenger. I can count on one hand how many times it sputtered all weekend. Bouncing, sidehill, downhill, uphill, it hardly ever missed a beat. I'm gonna keep it on there. I need to tweek on the fuel throttle from idle. It will die. Not enough gas to the 408.

Try googling, "how to tune a carter AFB carb". I just found several hits on guides for this carb. It appears that the Edelbrock Performer adopted the same basic design, so you could also search using that criteria.

Step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting procedures are bound to exist that should walk you through the entire process.

well i fixed the carb problem. i bought a new edelbrok 600. the afb dumped so much gas into the motor the oil was about 4 qts over full. opps. now the truck runs great. i was almost ready to just put a match to it.

Wait, you're getting fuel in your oil? That's not a problem with the carb. Do you have a mechanical fuel pump? If so, perhaps it's toasted and is leaking fuel into the crankcase.

When you have a massive problem with a carb that allows fuel to overcome the needle and seat it move its way down the intake past the open valves past the rings and into the crank case. Not saying the fuel pump failure doesn't have the same results just saying what he described sounds right.

I have 3 filters in line on mine now. 1 betweenthe tank and the electric pump. 1 on the electric pump. 1 between the pump and carb. It should stay clean.
