Chevy- Dodge Manaul Transmissions
Ok i need some information. My buddy want to put a 4 spd in his scout with a chevy v8 and np203. Originaly he was going to use a SM465. But found out it had a granny first gear. He wants a close ratio trans like the Dodge NP445. I was told that the NP445 was orginally a chevy transmission and that dodge picked it up in the late 70's.
This is the info i found SM 420 H 7.05 NS 3.57 1.70 1.00 --- GM, pre '69 SM 465 H 6.55 NS 3.58 1.57 1.00 --- GM, post '69 GM/MWI L 4.03 2.37 1.47 1.00 .86 GM, like T-5 NV4500 H 6.34 3.44 1.71 1.00 .73 GM, '92-94 NV4500 H 5.61 3.04 1.67 1.00 .75 Chrysler,GM-'95up NV3500 M 4.01 2.32 1.40 1.00 .73 Chrysler NP435 H 6.68 NS 3.34 1.66 1.00 --- Chrysler NP435 H 4.78 NS 2.39 1.37 1.00 --- Chrysler NP445 M 4.56 NS 2.28 1.31 1.00 --- Chrysler What i need to know is if this is true or did chevy never use a Np445. The np445 has a 4.56 first gear rather then a granny gear. Also if chevy didn't use 445 then did thye ever makea close ratio transmission? Thanks Eric

They used a 4 spd with overdrive in some trucks. I have only heard of one, it may have been the one you mentioned, I dont remember what the model number was. It had overdrive and not very strong from what I understand. The only other option for a 4spd would be to use one out of a car and either adapt it somehow or use a divorced t-case.
If it were me I'd just use a NV3500. I love the one in my truck for street driving. The gears are pretty evenly spaced and it also has OD. It sucks in 4HI but it does ok in 4LO. Why so set on not having granny gear anyway?

Well he wanted a 4 spd but he doesn't want a granny gear because he doesn't plan on towing with his scout or really offroading. he might play around every once in while but nothing that would need a granny gear 1st. he mainly wants it for daily driving, and a granny first is pretty worthless on the street if not towing. He would take a 5spd , but the cost of them is what is stoping him.
