CJ transfer case swap

I've got an 80's model CJ that came with a quadratrac t-case.....IT SUCKS! What t-case would be the easiest to swap out with? I think it's got a turbo 400 Trans. It's the original Trans that came with the jeep. My rear model 20 diff has an offset. I'm gonna do away with that rear axle but I need to swap the t case!

Any help would be appreciated!

304 engine?

Th400 should be 10spline, Dana 20 out of a FSJ W/ a th400 would be the easiest...

You could pull trans & put a 32 spline output in it, then run any Chevy tcase as long as the adapter matches the flange on the tcase...

find an amc bell housing tf904/999/727,
23spline output, run a Dana 300

Put a 3/4/5 speed out of a Cj with matching tcase...

Pull engine trans & tcase, drop Chevy/ford/dodge, engine trans tcase

I've got a model 20 t case! But it came out of another cj I have. Not sure if the output splines are the same as the t-150 that was in front of it! I guess I could pull the quadratrac and count splines. If the 400 has the same as the t-150.....I'm good!

Thanks!

I'm not positive, but a dana20 behind a 150 (and all manuals) has a bull gear that is bolted to the trans output, I think the fsj is the only d20 with an auto in front of it...

I aren't all jeep 20's bull gear though? Didn't think that there was anything that directly swapped with a quadratrac. May be wrong though, been a long time since I messed with the old stuff.

Learn something new everyday, not too familiar with the fsj stuff.

That's no lie! I looked a lil and everyone said they needed output shaft swaps to do the conversion. I had a qtrac th400 that I was gonna use at one time, it was a coarse splines output on it. I did see somewhere that offered bull gears for different spline shafts though, think it was Novak.

In all honesty I wouldnt bother swapping to a Dana 20, I would try to go Dana 300 personally. Better aftermarket support, and better low range compared to a 20. Should be pretty easy to locate a 999/Dana 300 combo, or something along those lines for sure.

I was just looking for the easiest way out! I guess I'll have to find a donor vehicle and just swap to a Chevy v8 and 350 or 700 with a 208. This jeep is just a daily driver and occasional wheeler for my daughter. I really didn't want to do all that but I really don't want that offset rear 20 under it!

Easiest way out would be a different jeep tranny and case 999/300 for example, and swap a centered rear diff in. tossing a Chevy 208 in the mix is a whole new can of worms, short rear driveshaft and a slip yoke.. Now you can convert to fixed yoke on them fairly easily, but that's still work. Either way you are still swapping rear axles. Another option is jeep auto and dodge np208, they are direct bolt on and are already fixed rear yoke. Since you have a th400 already, you could have the tranny output swapped and run any ol Chevy tcase you wanted easily too. Plenty of options out there for sure, I wouldn't swap the motor unless there is a specific reason you don't want to keep same motor. (Says the guy in middle of engine swap...lol)

This is what I did.
I just bought the Novak adapter for an AMC 400. Just rebuilt the tranny and threw in the output and found me a 300 to through in.

But they are right, the cheapest is to just find a chevy 400 with a 208 or 205 bolted to it and swap the guts for the chevy tranny to the AMC tranny. Only difference is bell housing. All the parts interchange.
