crank pulley not aligning?

hopefully this will be the last post about this god forsaken motor its all i lack now. i just got my balancer in and installed, i used summits instal tool. i bolted up the crank pulley and from at eyeball it looks to be too far towards the engine? is their a company that may make a spacer for between the balancer and pulley? i have never had this problem before so i have no clue. thanks in advance guys.

Pull the balancer away from the motor, you most likely installed the balancer to far

Balancers go on all the way till they bottom out they can not be installed to far, unless you forget to install an oil slinger or something like that.

What other pulley (water pump, alternator, power steering, or all three?) are you comparing the crank pulley to?

The balancer should be very close to the timing cover, like 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch away.

V-belts are a little forgiving with alignment, so perfection isn't required. And your "eyeball" could be lying (hey, it has happend to me), so if you want to see how far off your pulleys are: take a straight edge and place it on the front of the crank pulley and slide it up to your other pulleys to see if they are out-of-whack.

Also, just a random question, what year is you engine?

*You can't pull out the balancer, it has to bottom out. The timimg gear bottoms on the crank, and the balancer bottoms on the timing gear, there are no slingers on a BBC.

Are you running a long waterpump or a short pump?

I'm running a serpentine belt and I'm not sure of the year of the motor it's a crate gm reman td 427. Yes the balancer has bottomed out on the crank. From an eyeball it looks to be about 1/4 inch too far in. I found summit has spacers for 20 bucks or so I may give them a shot. I'm just not too comfortable pulling the balancer back just to align the belts.

The reason I ask the year is because they may have different balancers for different belt setups. (Basically, 2 piece rear main or 1 piece rear main.)

I don't know if a 427T was ever offered with a serp belt.

But, yes you can put shims under the pulley. And that's probably what I would do. It's cheap and easy, and apparently other people have the same problem or Summit wouldn't have the shims.

oh its 2 piece rear main. and i was starting to figure the same thing about the shims, as long as they are solid or billit i think they'll be just fine. im gonna wrap a belt around it and see exactley how far off it is maybe post a pic as well.

riverdog i think you have lost your mind it only goes one way lol, and im pretty sure i bought the right balancer its just the same as any other bbc internal balanced motor with a 2 piece. i put a belt around it today and it was just a smidget off im talking like 1/8" give or take. but thats just enough to pop that belt at good rpms. im gonna order moroso's spacer kit i the morning and see how she fits.
