Which crate engine to buy for 1978 chevy?

Here is the project. I currently own two trucks. A 1978 heavy 1/2 4x4 350 with th350 and a rotted out body. A 50 lb sack of corn will go through the floorboards in about 20 seconds. The motor is also in need of a major overhaul. The second truck is an 82 1/2 ton 305 th700transmission two-wheel drive with a very good body. I want to swap the 82 body on the 78 frame.

I also have a nv4500 and transfer case with a driver’s side drop.
I also have a complete TBI setup with wires, computer, etc.
I also have a divorce np205 with 3 output shafts passenger side drop.
I will be needing a clutch peddle and linkage. I do have the orginal slave and master clutch cylinder.
I will be needing the proper clutch plates and flywheel.

I am wanting to purchase a gm crate motor that will bolt up to the nv4500 using stock parts and also add the TBI setup as well. If possible I would like the block to have the old fuel pump setup in case I wanted to go back to a carb for some reason. Also I have not measured yet but I am considering keeping the drivers side transfer case that is currently on the NV4500 to act as an extra gear reduction.(It may be too long.) And the last question would be will the ac unit, power steering pump, alternor, ect from the 1982 305 bolt up to the new crate engine.

I was looking at the summit site and it looks like they have new crate engines for about $1800. They sell two different truck type 350, one for the old carb type and one for the TBI type. However I do not know which on would work best.

The main purpose of the truck will be a tow rig that can also be used on fire roads in the rocky mountains and also the back roads around Big Bend National and State Park. Not looking to do any extreme offroading with this truck.
Thanks for you time

I do not know what year model engine you will need to tell them you need, but I recommend calling your dealership of choice and seeing what the price is for one of their crates. They had a good price when I bought mine, and offered a good warranty also. Just something to think about.

I think it was around the 1800 mark IIRC, and that was pick-up at their shop so there was no shipping tacked on. The engine was put in around late 05, early 06.

Personally, I would pull the 350 you have now and have it rebuilt, if possible. You can save some money and you can build it the way you want it. Contact comp cams, crane, or someone else to see what cam would work good with the tbi. A good machine shop should also give you some kind of warranty if they assemble it.

You can mate up the nv4500 pretty easy. Just get the right flywheel and clutch to fit the engine. The input shaft and bell housing bolt pattern are all the same. You will probably need an aftermarket bell housing though. The older models used an external slave mounted on the passenger side to clear the driverside driveshaft. IIRC, it will hit the driveshaft if you use a pass. side drop t-case. The later models used an internal slave/throwout bearing. I dont know of any issues with running them, except you have to pull the whole tranny if the slave goes out.

the nv4500 came off I think a 96 chevy with the slave cylinder inside. I was wondering how much time and money it would take to convert the NV4500 to a two wheel drive transmission. Being the transfer case that is currently on it is drivers side drop and I will most likely be running the devorice np205.

Not sure what the cost would be, but you would need the output shaft, rear cover, and yoke. Might be easier and cheaper to find someone to trade with.

What about swapping in a drivers side front axle? Use the trans and transfer case as is, and just rebuild your 350.

I would rather have the nv4500 than the TH350. I have never had to spend money to repair a standard but I have had to repair a few automatics. Plus pulling a trailer with a the grany gear is nice and the transmission will not over heat pulling a heavy trailer up hill. Do you think the np243c is a better transfer case or as good as the np205?

Down the road I was looking at replacing the axles with 3/4 ton. Do you know what truck has a drivers side drop that will bolt up to the 1978 frame?

Thanks for the tip. I normally keep one farm truck on the place anyway. I forgot about the tax exempt part.

I also found out that what I thought was an Np205 is really a np200 or np201. The extra rear output shaft must of been for a 6x6 army truck. Looking on the web parts are still made for this one.

I seen something on the web that the 12499529 only has a 12 month warranty and needs a special chip for the TBI to run the high spark advance. That being said I am looking at the 10067353. 250 HP 350lb of torque with 3 year warranty. Price around $1400. Has anyone used this motor before?

Pace Performance drop off the universal crate motor to my door step with free freight for $1400. Pace only gives you 14 days to return it if you have problems so I did not go the TBI route due to lack of time. Installed Edelbrock 1400 carb with Edelbrock aluminum Mainifold. Super easy swap with no problems. I will switch over to TBI later.

I agree with Prime time or you could go with some from Jegs. Marlin makes good motors that put out over 700hp.

Holy COW 700HP!!!! I could see that much HP snapping my drive shafts, popping off my u-joints, twisting my frame, burning my tires down to the rim when I punch it at the stop light, ECT.. That sounds like a lot of fun how every that is another project all together.

Which brings up my next project down the road. I am looking into installng my 440 dodge big block into my solid alxe toyota frame and placing a model A truck body over the hold thing. Since this type of motor can push a big 1970 type car at over 150 MPH can you imagine what it would be like when you stomp on the gas pedel? I am sure it would be hell on wheels in the sand dunes. And I am sure if I would not be able to give it all of the gas at once or it would twist, bend, and break just about anything and everything on the rig.
