Shouldn't have to worry about the engine. It is the rest of the truck that seems to fall apart around it.

Id say mostly the front end (ball joints, bushings) and the trans.

2wd auto no goose neck hitch.I have heard that the injectors dry up from the "new improved fuel",and the MPG varies from truck to truck even with matching equipment and gears.

2wd - ball joints

Auto tranny can be weak, especially if you start turning up the power.

Any pics?

I just got through doing balljoints, tre's, sway bar links and unit bearings on my 03 3500 2wd. Not a big deal. I wouldn't let it stray you away from it by any means. I'm just disappointed in how the interior has heald up. I guess it's all about how good of shape it's in or if it's been maintained properly. Look closely at the docking port under the steering wheel. See if it has scratches on it. That will tell you if someones been plugging into alot with programmers and diagnostic machines. Is the dash all busted up yet? Big hole in the bed from a goofy exhaust stack?

Really? 79,000? Unless you can verify it, I'd be very surprised. I have an '04, and love it, but mine is standard. Bought it with 145K miles. Just make sure the engine idles very smooth. Any roughness is not good. Smell the oil for diesel, but that year shouldn't have any problems.

There's two different 04s, one has a bigger Turbo and more powerful motor or something. Goggle 04.5 cummins, I'm sure the specifics are detailed somewhere.

If its an early 04 my need a lift pump soon. the 04 1/2 they started putting them in the tank. Check all the vent doors if its important to you. They were plastic and had a problem breaking especially the floor to defrost. Just had them all repaired on my 03, other than that 200,000 and only 1 injector and 2 lift pumps. Oh and about 100pds of freon since I cant seem to find the leak.

The reason you hear of the newer motors having a hard time keeping injectors in them is from dirty fuel. They eat the plngers and seals out, and start to bypass fuel ubtill it wont start anymore. I would recommend a good fuel system (FASS or AirDog) with 2mic filters and go on down the road. If you just cant spend the money at least rub 2mic stock replacment filters, AFE sells them for $15ea.

As far as things to look for, I would check turbo shaft play, listen for any lope or loose lifters, and see how the trans feels.

Things to do when you buy it, at least throw in a shift kit and adjust the 1-2 bands, a low stall single disk billet convertor is a great addition that will make the truck get better mileage and feel tons better. The shift kit is about $70 the convertor is about 6-800. Just these will make the dodge trans last way longer and perform way way better.

A good little all around tuner is a Smarty Jr, it adds duration and timing which is what you want, dont buy a pressure only box, it will not add MPG and is awful for injectors.

Main differences from 04.5-07 and 03-04s...

04s: Smaller piston bowls
7 or 8 hole injector nozzles
smaller valve seats
2 injection events per cycle
smaller turbo comp wheel and manual wastegate
APPs sytem (cable opprated trans control)
305hp or cali 235hp
No cat convertor
Engine mounted elec lift pump

04.5-07s: Larger piston bowls
5 hole injector nozzles
larger valve seats
3 injection events
larger 60mm comp wheel and electronic controlled wastegate
no apps
325hp
Cat convertor
in-tank lift pump

The extra injection event was for emission along with the cat.
The 03-04s are known for dropping valve seats.
The in-tank lps are alot better and last longer
The 04.5+ trucks are known to melt pistons easier due to the extra event and thinner bowl walls, (which is irrelevent if you just use a mild tuner.)

Just a little info, there are about a million other differences but these are the ones that really count. Hope this helps.

Bodie
