Custom trans to transfer case adapter

Has anyone ever built their own transmission to transfer case adapter? I currently am running a turbo 350 to custom doubler kit where both cases are rotated flat. The problem is I want to change to a sm456 standard tranny, and it will not bolt up. A turbo 350 has a 4 bolt pattern, which means all you have to do to rotate the case 90 degrees is to change bolt holes. A sm 465 has a figure 8 pattern, which you cannot clock the 203. I talked to ord, and nobody is currently making this adapter. I thought about cutting a peice of pipe to the correct length, welding in a bung and having it machined so that it will center the tranny and transfer case bearing caps, then making plates for the ends that will allow me to clock the transfer case any way I want, and of coarse making a few gussets. Just wondering if anyone has tried this, or has any ideas.

Sounds like a good idea and it should work. how short can it be made?

Is it possible, or how hard would it be to divorce the 203?

Why you gonna divorce the 203 in a doubler config?

Just wondering.

(Hijack) In my situation, I lack gears, mine is currently divorced, I thought about doing a divorced doubler. From what I've found in a google search, Ford had some divorced np203 transfer cases in 71-76 f250's.
Sorry for the hijack.

Not to mention, being divorced, you can clock it any way you need to.

I guess you could build it any lenght if you had the right input and output shafts, but I was just going to make it factory length because it will put everything back in it's original location in my setup.
Mitch: It would be tough to divorce it, and with the doubler, this would be an extremely long setup.

Donuts, I meant the adapter, doesn't it have the sleeve like the 205? Would \ could the adaptor be shortened to the length?

you can also get a 6 bolt adaptor for the T350. gives more options for clocking.

This adaptor is only about 5 inches long, and cast. I need it to stay the same legnth, but rotate the transfer case 90 degrees.

Only a few of them line up after the case is rotated, but I might be able to build some brackets to steady it a little more...

More durable, and cheaper at this point! I'm going thru the whole divorce thing right now, and money is tight. All I need is an adaptor to make the 4 spd work, vs a rebuild and upgrade on the auto.

I thought I saw an aftermarket adapter somewhere, may've just been in my sleep though.

Have you tried contacting any of the adapter manufactuers to see if they can make one for you?

Found it. http://www.northwestfab.com/sm465adaptors.html

They might be able to make one clocked up to your specs if you ask.

Looked everything over last night. Redrilling won't work, but I am going to call Northwest Fab to see what they can do. Ord said they didn't have anything for that, and didn't know of anyone currently making this piece. Thanks for the info guys.

I may be showing my ignorance, but it's never stopped me before...I have priced adapters for tranny to TC of different applications, and are you sure a custom made adapter would be cheaper than a T350 rebuild? I have never done one myself, but I am told with a few of the right tools, a T350 can be garage rebuilt pretty cheap.

You are absolutly right. I wasn't talking about buying one though, I was talking about building one becuase I already have everything else needed to make the conversion. After looking closer, I think I'm going to venture into the land of tranny rebuilding. I'm a certified machinist and engine builder, set rear ends up on weekly bases, build custom suspensions, and build my own wiring harnesses, but have never rebuilt an automatic tranny, so I guess it's time to learn something new!

Tracker will become famous soon enough
Smile adapter

Hi, I'm a /fabricator/machinist also and a motorbike and import car mechanic. I think the 5" long 8bolt figure8 to 4bolt adapter would be easy enough to make. 2 pieces of 1/2 plate one with 8 holes drilled to match the figure8 pattern and one with 4 holes drilled to match the 4bolt pattern. Then drill the hole in each for your shaft to fit through. Then weld in a piece of schedual 80 pipe big enough for the shaft to fit through but small enough not to interfear with the bolt holes. Did you make your own Doubler T-case kit or did you buy one from somewhere? I want to make a NP203/NP205 Doubler when swap out the 700R4 for a NV4500 in my 1993 C1500 ext. 2wd 305 work truck, But then I'll need to track down a 1979 Ford D60 front end to complete the 4wd convertion also. Thanks, Tracker.

Going from a figure 8 to a 4 bolt is easy. My problem is going to a sm465 figure eight with 2 bearing retainers, to a 203 figure eight with a bearing retainer and a shaft lock, then rotaing the 203 up 90 degrees. Figure eight to four bolt auto is simple. Just take the factory adapter and rotate it one set of bolt holes. I bought my doubler from ord. These people are excelent to talk to and can answer any questions you have. Give them a call at 970-945-7777
