Diesel Stack or Stacks

Just curious what everyones opinion is on stacks.. Right now I have a bone stock 98 model Cummins 12V with full 4" exhaust, side exit behind passenger wheel. No matter how hard I get on it, I never get the rollin coal look (which is good), however like most diesels I do get the black smoke stain on the bumper, the bed just above the exhaust, and on the front of my trailer when I am towing.. I am thinking of going to a single stack on the truck, not because I want to look cool, but because I want to keep the smoke stain off the truck and off what I am towing. My main concern is when towing my boat, I wont want black soot on my boat ( I do tow the boat a fairly good distance at times). I have no intentions on making it smoke like a freight train by any means, in all honesty I just plan to put new injectors in it, and slide the fuel plate all the way and call it good. Only reason for the mods there are because I have a leaky injector, may as well put fresh ones all the way through out, and the fuel plate mod is to try and get a lil more power at top end.(truck fights to get from 60 up to 70 mph with a load in stock form.

Basically what is the consensus on stacks?? Are they gay no matter what?? Do I have a legitimate reason for doing a stack?

Diesel Stack or Stacks

I say do a short black stack offset to the passenger side. Keep the muffler on it, and it won't be annoying loud. Functionality over looks.

I have no muffler, the exhaust system is a full 4" from manifold back.. it honestly isnt too loud surprisingly.. Definatly keep it on passenger side if I do it, dont want a a bed full of exhaust pipe, and dont want $1000 worth of stacks back there either..

Diesel Stack or Stacks

David has a stack that I gave him, that I'm sure he'll part with. It's a nice design and already cut down to the right height.

IMO, stacks belong on 18 wheelers only.

Might try a turn down tip on your exhaust to see if that would help with black soot problem.

when i was going to do it i was going to go to ITP and get a 6" exhaust pipe and build it myself instead of spending 4-600 on tips. but putting it in the truck wont keep the black stuff off of whatever you are pulling. if you are worried about the black stuff everywhere, then do like Bruiser said and put a dump on it to where it pushes it towards the ground. but i do like the single stack look in the bed.

I'm not billowing black smoke, hell I cant even get a puff of black smoke, just a slight haze on occasion. With a load, to the floor, on an incline, no g. There is nothing to be tuned, nothing has been done, its 130K mile bone stock engine. Honestly I have the opposite problem, my truck needs more fuel, the thing is a turd towing my load through the hills. I have no intentions of looking like a train ever, but once I do the fuel plate mod, and injectors it will have smoke a lil when stomping on the fuel (do not intend to do this all the time, but there are times it is needed). The turn down idea is an option as well I suppose, just worry that will make the truck louder, and make it resonate in the cab more. I am happy with the sound now, striaght piped and all, but do not want it louder if I dont have too.

Yes, it has a 4" intake tube as well with the BHAF on it. The exhuast and the intake is all that has ever been touched, hell the IP has never been opened, still has the breakoff screw in it

Me personally stacks look BA but way to loud in the cab. I had a friend in high school ha a 97 dodge 5" turbo back into stacks you couldnt think inside the cab.
