Drivetrain changes possibly...

Ok, most of you know what my rig is (its in my sig), the 304 in it runs great, and is mostly all stock other than edelbrock intake and MSD ignition. The tf999 behind it works, but has some issues (discussed that on here before). The dana 300 is fully built to the hilt, and will stay regardless. I also have a 2wd th350 freshly rebuilt (have a 4x4 output shaft for it and can have this swapped for free). On my engine stand is a fresh .060 over 1 pc rear main 350 block with a set of .125 dome pistons, and a fresh stock rotating assembly. I have a fresh set of TBI heads, and a few more misc parts for this motor. I also have a np241 on the way for future doubler use. Here is my dilemma.

I want to do a transmission swap at least on the Jeep as I am not to fond of the tf999, even if it did work correctly. I had planned to sell the 350, and purchase the novak kit to adapt the th350 to the 304 and go from there. At the same time, I planned to do the 241/300 doubler, all while leaving the 304 in place. I had a buyer for the 350, but looks like he may have backed out now, so I am back to square 1. The kit to put the th350 behind a 304 is $450, for the same amount I could finish up the 350, and go ahead and swap in a completly fresh drivetrain into the Jeep all at 1 time. I am actually leaning towards this, as it may be better overall in the end. What do you guys think??

ALSO, while on the topic if I do decide to go with the 350, I obviously don't need a power monster so the TBI heads will be ok, and being that I run propane, the dome pistons will help. The motor has a new cam, but I have no idea exactly what cam it is. by micing the cam, I am getting .488 lift I/E, which all of the .488 lift cams are 234 duration at .050. Looks to be for 2000-6000 rpm powerband. Should that cam stay or should I change it? ALso, if I do keep it, do I need to do anything as far as valve springs go, or should I be ok stock on those? Like I say, if I do the engine swap, I dont want to build a high hp motor that will lead to lots of breakage, but would want to make the best of what I have for sure.

Ditch the 304, run the 350/350

I love my AMC mill... I have no problem with the tf727 behind it...
But, there is always the "man, a 350/ls chev & 700r4/4l60 would be sweet!" I have all the want to do swap, then I sit down & go over the numbers...

AMC mill to chev trans-
Adaptors, mounts, inputs on t-case/doubler, driveshaft changes, t-case clocking, cutting new holes in floor for shifters & then its still an AMC(hot, slow, heavy, parts are expensive, $1500 for my machine work & parts...)

Chev mill & chev trans
Looking back I should have done the chev thing...efi options, serpentine belt, cheap abundant parts, overdrive trans..

I think it is a waste of money to put a hydromatic behind an AMC!

Bottom line is its your rig, if you like it run it, if you want to change, do it, if you worry about $, get out of 4x4s!

Either one cost $$$, no question, but at same time, gotta think it through. The wife doesnt seem to agree on the $$$ situation LOL. Realistically the doubler setup and all is happeneng regardless, the main question is 304+adapter, or 350. My expert opinon (kidding), says do the 350, keep it simple, and be able to use off the shelf parts and less fancy custom stuff. Just seeing what other think.

Another vote here for the 350/350 combo. As far as power goes, my 40 has a bone stock tbi motor in it and it does fine. That's probably one of the worst motors Chevy made power wise. It does have good low end though.

x2, run the tbi. I've been very happy with every one I've had. Even without the big power numbers they have plenty for crawling. Although, when the time comes I will prob go with a 6.0 or bbc.

First on the cam....

Try to check the numbers. There should be a series of numbers and/or letters on the end of the cam. I have not seen one that did not have something. I am curious how you got the .488 with a mic. I assume you did (lobe lift - base circle) x 1.5 ?? LSA is another big thing you need to know for the manners of the cam, but either way I think it is way too big. I would be looking for something around .450 lift with 1.5 rockers and 200-210 duration range with around 112 LSA. That will give you more snap over stock and still keep off idle torque strong while running out good up to 5K RPM. I have done a couple of engines in that basic range and they are great little street engines that idle clean and smooth when warm.

On to the engine. 350/350 is vanilla cookie as it gets, but it is cheap and they just work. My two cents would be to spend the money for a reverse valve body setup. My 700 is reverse valve body with art carr shifter and it is so effortless to drive. I can not imagine going back to a dang gate shifter and having to row from first to reverse on the trails. I promise it is money well spent and you will love it.

Yes, I did factor in the 1.5 for the rockers on the cam. There are all sorts of numbers, but I can't cross any of them to anything. I'll pos up what info I can get tonight.

You would be ahead by swapping in the 350 and a little smaller bump stick. I've had great success with Comp XE & XE4x4 series as well as Lunati Voodoo. The propane will really like the added compression from the domes.

BTW. Where did you come up with an aftermarket intake for that engine? I can't find one less than an arm and a leg for my wife's rig and I want to convert it to propane. With the stock 2bl,the mixer will be out the hood with having to use an adapter.

After the anniversary run, I'll be pulling the existing setup out as soon as we get back. I have a very small window of opportunity to do the work due to my actual work schedule, so I will be starting on it pretty quickly. Between now and then I need to get the motor finished up, get it bolted to transmission, and get the doubler started.

Alright, well if it is a safety concern I guess I can see the issue.

Ok, here are numbers on the cam starting from the front of the cam:

EP1
D11 C11
HO 18
CWC

Then on the back of the cam in biog stamping is Z098, and in smaller stamping is CS1138P
