engin question

ok so i have a 80-82 chevy 305 2 bolt.... if i attempted to change the valve cover gaskets and the ones i put on were about 1/4 of an inch too short... could that cause compression issues and make it run crappy? the other side of this is that in the process of changing the gaskets, i found a 12 threaded bolt laying on top of the passenger side head... and another small bolt laying inside the driverside head... could those have damaged something after taking them out... everything looked like it was in its correct place with the exception of those bolts... or could the big bolt have been holding a valve open that was stuck and thats why it runs crappy??? i bought 7/35 cork valve gaskets for an 80s 305 so we'll see what happens when i put those on... oh yeah and the passenger side vavle cover is the one leaking oil at the moment... the driver side one is connected to the pcv valve and thus has a vaccum...

i need more

those aren't the right bolts they will come lose big time. need to get some new one and clean out out the bolt holes to secure them right buddy, they look pretty dirty. Some time when bolts are all cruedy the dont tighten down right and your smushing down on the crued inside the bolt hole, well go out and get a tap and die set man and re tap them all, hopefully that will fix your leak man. big time.

ps. harbor frieght has the cheepest set, just to use everyknow and then not the best but get the job done.
here there site

If you really found that second set of bolts in the engine then you need to tear it down and inspect it or replace it. Neither of those bolts belong in that engine, they belong in the body. Who knows what else is in there. The first one could've possibly been used for a head bolt, but IIRC, they don't use washers.

The first one is covered in oil and gunk that might be found under a valve cover. the second one has rust sand dirt, and maybe tar on it.More like it came off the handrail on his porch,no way the head!

pull both valve covers and take some pics, then post em on here so we can see. If the looks of the bigger bolt is any indication of the inside of your engine, you should pull the motor and clean it, and do a overhaul. A simple re-ring job is not that hard to do and it will be a good learning experience for you

I really did think it was a joke....a little harsh yes..you don't know what these guys around here are capable of. but, the fact that those were in your valve cover, prompted me to say that..not wanting to be a dick..yes, you need to start somewhere..but some times you can do more harm than good...if the motor runs bad and you find objects in your valve cover that don't belong, you could assume that something might have gotten into the intake that could bend a valve or damage a piston. at this point Rastus is right and plan on a mild refresh and inspect the engine...L

well i am planning on that... actually i'm planning on building a 350 but i've got the 305 for now... after watching it once, i fail to see how putting the correct valve cover gaskets on my truck could be a bad thing or how i could cause "harm".. obviously i'm aware that i shouldn't leave anything laying around in there... and if i think that there is something amiss, i'll probably stop working and call a buddy... not to mention snap a few pics...

You're still stuck on the valve covers? I wasn't talking about doing harm to the valve covers. It's doing harm to everything else by running it...learn away....put the 350 in it...L

Can't get any worse then it is. I say pull the heads( for a lookie)....replace head gaskets. A good FSM will come in handy along with a good torque wrench. What you learn on the 305 will transfer onto the 350.
Learn it love it.........after that a 383 stroker would make life sweet.
I've had a 305 73 nova, 383 1970 nova, 383 82 step side 4x4.
I love mouse motors....it's been awhile sense I have owned a V8. But a Chevy will always be my first love.
