Engine diagnosis - TBI

I have an '87 TBI engine in my rig, totally stock

I was driving it yesterday, went about 2 miles, then it started missing. It sounds like a dead plug. I checked all the plugs and they look the same. Also, I replaced the cap and rotor a few months ago.

I really don't know much about the electronics for the fuel injection but I suspect it is somewhere downstream of the cap and rotor since it's a consistent "missing" sound.

Any suggestions on things to check?

Prolly need to do a compression check.

chk the plug wires.. make sure the contacts inside are shiny, also use an ohm meter on them. check the spark plugs for broken porcelain against the electrode.

Don't trust the plugs..or wires..one could be grounding out on the block..pull one plug wire at a time until no change.pretty basic but what the heck you asked......L

Easiest way to find the bad cylinder is with a spray bottle of water. You want to start it from cold and have your water bottle ready. Spray each header tube or manifold runner with water and see which one does not evaporate or steam immediately. Then chase down the problem. Most likely plug wire or fouled plug.

If its not a plug or wires check the module under the dist cap and also make sure the fuel filter is clean. Common issues with tbi motors from my experience.

Well, I initially thought it was bad fuel from a local station, drained the tank and replaced with clean fuel but that didn't help.

Finally found a plug wire rubbing against the exhaust. Been running those wires for 5 or 6 years. Musta got tangled up when I replaced the distributor cap a while back.

Should have some new wires this evening.

I was getting worried, too close to a run for engine problems. Thanks for the hints, y'all.
