Ford starter dilemma...

I've had problems with the starter on my Bronco ('92, fullsize, 351) from the first week I bought it. I've replaced the starter, cables, battery, and the problem is intermittent at best.

The starter will turn for a bit and then lock up, or will just not turn at all. It's clicking and getting full power. The solution is to get under the truck and smack the starter--it knocks something loose and all is good.

It did it with the old starter, and the new one. Everything seems to be lined up good and the bolts are tight. Would shimming it out some help? Or do I just keep replacing starters until I find one that works? Autozone lifetime warranty one is what I purchased, and when they test it they claim it's working fine. I know better, as it's binding somewhere and I'm getting tired of crawling under the truck everytime it gets hung up...

take it apart and disconnect something in the solenoid so that it will fail and take it back!

What kind of shims do Fords have? I'm no kinda familiar with them...

Is there an Autozone part, or is it just a couple washer?

Get a jegs mini starter for a ford and be done with it. I've been running one on my drag truck for about 4 years now with no problems.

I rediscovered my hatred for wrenching today. It's been a few months, but it came back to me quick enough.

Disco'd the battery, spent 30 minutes cleaning all that. Got under there and pulled the starter, put in a shim from AZ, and tightened that trigger wire (which I think may have been a part of the problem). It certainly didn't hurt to have the shim. Truck starts much smoother now. The wire was a little loose on the tab and I can see where it might've kicked itself loose enough to not give good contact.

Started it a few times in the drive, and then went for a little start/stopping tour around town running errands. Seems to have fixed the problem. Of course, it rarely happens when I'm driving it. I'm afraid the wife will still call stranded somewhere...

Yeah, no joke.

And last night, during the downpour she tells me... "You know that big hole that always fills up with water by the tracks next to Putt-Putt?"

"Uh... yeah babe, I do."

"All those little cars were scared to go through it. It was too much of a challenge for me. I made it just fine."

The floorboards were wet--just by the doors for some reason. Kinda like the water might've been a little HIGH...

Jeeps are for girls
And guys that wish they were girls.....

Automatic transmissions are gay.

Flipped up tow mirrors are the sagging pants of the truck world.
