GM 5.7L 1998 V8 Intake Manifold Failure

Well it looks like my Tahoe's engine threw the intake manifold gasket today. I've been losing anti freeze like nuts. Nothing in the oil. Nothing on the ground. Nothing by the water pump. Very sweet smell of anti-freeze outside the vehicle. Taking it in to GM on Monday for diagnosis.

In doing research I have found that this is a common error on GM's behalf since the Vortec came out in the mid 90's. They have even been class action sued about it since it affects so many vehicles. I've already alerted the folks at the dealership that I'm aware of this, and I'm going to contact GM on the phone about it. I hope that this is what the P0304 code was about.

Anyone have experience with this issue?

Manny

My dad had this happen on his 96'. It is a VERY common problem on the 5.7s. You can usually milk them for a while, but eventually they have to be changed. It isn't a big deal at all. You shouldn't have a problem fixing it yourself......

Thinking you can pawn it off on GM after 15 years, are you serious??? C'mon Manny, it's a common problem yes, but 15 year old vehicles have problems....

I've change 10-12 of them. My wifes 96 Blazer was the last one I did. 175,000 miles not bad. Just change it and move on. GM won't do you anything. Your going to surprised how bad the gaskets are it's amazing they still run.

Alright, well, the only reason I reacted the way I did is because I have found stories of this job costing $500+ and labor. Seems ridiculous. I don't have the skills necessary to do the job. I'll see what happens on Monday. I've been feathering it for awhile, but now it empties the radiator in one 10 mile trip.

Yes you do Manny. It's an intake gasket. I've seen you do much more complicated work on your chevy. Get an chiltons, sit down and with a cup of coffee and I bet you'll see it's a piece of cake. I'm sure the $500 price plus labor is about right if you take it to GM. There's a reason people call them stealerships.

skills necessary? didn't you just rebuild the entire interior of a truck? it's not much harder then that and with that intake the biggest socket is like 1/2". it's a simple job takes a couple hours. hardest part will be getting the upper intake to let go of the injection spider. sometimes the gasket will stick to both and not let go. just remember when you put it back together a lube on the upper intake gaskets helps alot

our resident slackjaw yokel ryan can do it. he can drive from lubbock and fix it and drive back and be early to his first class in less time than gm or anyone else will have it done.

It's all moot now. She let go this morning and I have milk shake galore. It's on its way to Mr. Janke's for tear down and rebuild.

Shawn, I'll let you know if I need any parts. I should know Monday or Tuesday.

If you didn't run it long enough to hurt the bearings you don't have to do a complete rebuild.

Mr. Janke has it, so I'll know in a few days what the totality of it all is. Sucks. I didn't need this to happen, but now I know what is the deal.

I still have the 383 that Mr. Janke built me. I'm debating whether to sell it and the rest of my project off or keep it. My health is not too good and I just don't have the time or money to possibly finish it. I'm still on the fence about it.

I'm not rebuilding this 5.7 into anything but stock. No sense investing anything other than reinforced parts into a flawed design.

LOL. Matt, do you want to pay for it? I broke the bank on the '83 and have come up short. I think it may be time for me to realize that motorsports is just not my thing. Over the next few days I will decide what to do with the '83. If I dump it, I'll part everything out at good prices, scrap all the sheet metal, and call it a day.

I know someone would want the 60 set up, 14 bolt set up, drive shafts, NV4500, 241, Corbeau seats, the Warn 16.5ti, and the 383. I'll take a loss but it's better than just letting it all rot sitting not knowing when or if I could ever finish.

I wouldn't say this sport is not your thing. There is a huge difference between building a rig and going OCD over the top. Your rig would have been close to show quality - IMHO, way over the top for "this sport".

Why scrap any of it? You know as well as I do you could sell it whole or part it for a good price.

Plenty of other ways to get attention - Plentyoffish.com may help.
