Going Chevy Eh...jeep (Dana 300)

I'm getting ready to transplant my Yoda stuff for Chevy engine/transmission/T-case(jeep). So. I will be in my collect stage of the swap for now.
My WB is 115.5" So, I was thinking V8/SM465/Dana 300.
I would go V6 but the rumble of a V8 is something I missed sense having a 383 stroker in my 1970 Nova back in the early 90's.
TBI 350 (305) V8 is what I am looking to do. What year were they available?
I still want it to be street legal for the most part.
Info that I am looking for is Wiring system used and a Link would be nice.
As for Transmission. SM465 with hydraulic clutch... external if possible. What year to look for make/model?
and that leads to the T-case. Does anyone make a flange for the T-case so that I can keep my Toyota drive shafts? going with the 465 do I need a adapter that will bolt to the 300 or is their a 465 stocker that has that part?
I don't mind cutting the firewall or floor to accommodate this combo.
And for the Yoda guys with a Chevy V8. what headers/radiator did you use?

Jess at High Angle has the D300/toy flanges. That's who I got mine from.

Also, long tube headers typically do not clear the factory style external slave cylinders, or at least mine didnt. I had to use a block hugger/center dump style header.

Talk to George, he's got a 465/300 he will never ever ever ever use.
1987 was the first year for a tbi motor, and 1985 was the first year for the hydro clutch.
You will want a 32 spline 465 which also started in 1985. Then use the 465/208 adapter preferably the later shirt style 1985+.
Then you would need to 32 spline the 300, which is a few hundred bucks. Then 32 spline the front. But by then why not just put a 205 in it. Mas BEEF.

Then with the 205 all you need is the hydro clutch stuff and any 465/205.
10 spline is decent, mudaholic has it and he hammers down here and there.

Universal fit block huggers for any chevy small block will meet all your needs. They are short and tight the the block so you will have plenty of room to run the exhaust pipes where you need them for clearance. If memory serves I got mine for just a tad over $100 at napa and they came with all the hardware to mount them up including gaskets and collectors.

I'm still running them on my buggy and it has less room than the bread box on grandmas counter to fit things.

No automatic here. I prefer a standard. Also with the 300 its smaller and not really big and bulky. To many autos get broken and i like my compression braking.
Thanks for all the info that is provided. Ill talk to george and see if he wants to part with them.
thanks.

Thanks Bj. But you do not understand where i come from. This was my first 4cyl. And I miss the power from a v8 ever sense. Its time to move on. Beats letting my rig sit in the yard like yours. :-)

If you wanna go forward to something better then get a 5.3 or 6.0 chevy. Going TBI is going totally backwards from the orginal drivetrain even. IMO anyways------------------

SMACK!!!

Do some junkyard combing for a buick aura (sp?) V8. They are smaller than a chevy V6 and still pump out the ponys. Think buick 442 power in a small four banger style package. Basicly the same V8 block that indy cars use.

A 300 and 205 are the same ratio, but the 300 costs way too much more.

How do you figure going TBI is going back wards? I have a carb 20R/W56 dual stock cases with Chevy one tons.
I think a 305 or 350 will suite my needs just fine. Even a V6 TBI would be better then what I have now. SM465 comes into play only because the Bell housing cost $$$ for a Toyota and still I would think my transmission and stock Tcases would be the week link in my application.

I would think MPG would go up from 11. Screaming 3500K on the tach doing 65mph sucks. and then dropping down to 45pmh going up a hill sucks even more. I can't use 5th gear because of the 5.13's in the diffs. It takes like 5 minutes just to get back up to 65.
I enjoy driving my Rig. even if it's just around town or a trip to Big Shell.
Cost about the same as if I was going to tow it. I just can't see letting it sit for months at a time. I do seem to get tunnel vision once my mind is set on something. My "X" would attest to that. lol

Ok, a D300 is 85 lbs.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/model_300.htm

A NP205 is 135lbs.

http://www.northwestfab.com/203-205rebuilt.html

A D300 is 2.62:1 with a 4:1 gear availability.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/dana_300_parts.htm
http://www.jbconversions.com/index2.php?pc=2

The NP205 is 1.96:1 with a 3:1 gear availability.

I cant find where JB conversions is even offering the 3-to-1 gears anymore......

That's why I run a D300 over a NP205.

The bell housing to adapt a chevy V8 to a toyota transmission.

http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/pn-712560/

And the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate/through out bearing was over $700 shipped tothe door. Plus you have to change slave cylinders.

The SM465 weighs 175 lbs and has a 6.55:1 1st gear and is 12" long not including the t-case adapter..

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/sm465.htm

The NV4500 weighs 195 lbs has either 6.34:1 or 5.61:1 1st gear and is 18.9" long but has an overdrive gear. The NV4500 with the 6.34:1 low gear was available from 1993 to 1994 (Chevrolet) with the external slave. The 5.61:1 was available from 1995 and up (Chevrolet and Dodge) and has an internal slave.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/nv4500.htm

The W56 (this is what I am using) has a 3.95:1 1ft gear and is 25.5" long. I cant find the weight, sorry. But it is an aluminum case 5 speed.

http://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/tr...ar-ratio-chart

Here are some pics. I took ALL of these pics this morning at MY shop. Just for some referrence.

Factory Chevy V8/V6 to SM465 aluminum bell housing for mechanical clutch.

Factory Chevy V8/V6 to SM465 aluminum bell housing for external slave clutch.

Factory Chevy V8/V6 to SM465 steel bell housing for mechanical clutch.

Factory Chevy V8/V6 to NV4500 aluminum bell housing for internal slave clutch. (1995 and up)

Toyota 22RE to W56 factory aluminum bell housing with external slave.

A comparison (starting top left going clockwise) Aluminum 465 mechanical, aluminum 4500 internal slave, aluminum W56 external slave, and steel 465 mechanical.

Now for the fun stuff.
Chevy V8/V6 to W56 Advance Adapters aluminum bell housing with external slave(FJ40 slave).

FJ40 slave

Here is my current setup in my buggy.
1988 Chevy 4.3 V6/Adavance Adapters bell housing?W56 Toyota 5 speed transmission/Toyota topshift rangebox with factory 2.28 gears/Advance Adapters Toyota gear drive rangebox to Dana 300 adapter/Dana 300 with 4-to-1 gear set and High Angle Driveline D300 to Toyota driveshaft flanges, twin sticked with Northwest Fab cable shifters.

But this is just what I have researched in my builds.........
