Help w/TFI Jeep upgrade

I attempted to do a TFI upgrade on my CJ tonight with no luck. I will not fire now. I got the adapter, cap, rotor, wires, and the external coil (like the one in a HEI dizzy.) The + side of the old coil had two wires (one red/white ran to the solenoid and not sure where the other one went) going to it so I hooked them together and hooked them to the + side of the new coil. The - side had a green looking wire that went to a clip on the alternator so I hooked it to the - on the new coil. It should work now......nothing. I broke out the test light/volt meter and got nothing to the + side of the coil with the key in the on position and like 11V in the crank position. The negative side also went hot when in the crank position, but nothing came out of the top post. I will tell you this that the body is completely undone from the frame right now due to taking out body lift. Is that what is causing this?? I even hooked it back up like it was and still nothing......Is there a way to redo this, I just don't understand that much about the electrical part of vehicles and this really makes me feel like a retard. Any help is much appreciated.

coil

My 1st thought is that you have the wires reversed. The + side of the coil is only for the 12 volt input actually about 13 VDC during cranking and less with the engine running since it takes a little more high voltage to the spark plugs to fire the engine. Alot of poeple install their tach wire to the + side which will not work, the tach has to go to the - side of the coil because that is the side where the distributor "break" signal comes in. In most cases there should be a tach wire going back to your tachometer if so equipped and a wire from the distibutor or control box getting the "break" signal from the distributor to the - side of the coil. I do not understand why the - side of the coil in your setup is going to the alternator, it should not be. I will try to research this some more, in the meantime try reversing those wires if you feel comfortable with that.

If someone could just tell me what wires need to go where I can rewire it. I just put it back like it was......I think! Does the Duraspark box have to be grounded to work?

If I reverse the wires and they should not have been, what is the worst that could happen? My Jeep does not have a tach so no wire to worry with there. The positive side of the tach has one wire that goes to the solenoid and one that goes to.....I assume the Duraspark box (I did not trace it that far. The negative side has a wire that goes to a clip plugged into the alternator. So nobody thinks it is the grounding issue?

Was this in a kit you bought or just some parts you had laying around???

Not trying to be facetious, but was there any directions or a install manual? Have you tried looking these parts up on the net to see if there is a manual or somebody else has done this same thing???

make sure someone didnt swap a points distributor in...been there done that. Also, there is a ballast resistor you need to hunt down in one of those wires, i cant even begin to remember where it was....... TFI is a great upgrade if you are starting with a system that hasnt been hacked or tampered with, wiring in a CJ can be down right scary sometimes.

Well it has definetely been tampered with! I just need to know what wires go where to make this thing run.

Rastus, the TFI upgrade is one of the oldest upgrades around for Jeeps using stock parts that are readily available at any parts store.

manual

Sounds like it is time to get the installation manual from the manufacturer with wiring suggestions for your specific application. It is tough to diagnose a problem when you cannot see what is going on. Good luck with it. BTW if it was reverse wired , which i doubt since one of the wires from the coil - side was going to the alternator which in no way can generate a "break" signal then it wont hurt anything to reverse them, but, it does sound like someone just started hooking up wires willy nilly.

Well we got it running again. Got a schematic of the Duraspark system off the net and went by that. Still does not run as smooth as I think it should. I figured with both the MC2100 carb and the TFI upgrade she would run nearly perfect.

It is not the firing order, it runs better than that. Runs great at high RPM's, just has a slight miss at idle and slightly above. Also does not wanna idle by itself and has to be pumped to start. How many turns are the 2 screws on the front of the carb supposed to be turned?

CARB? PUMPED?
TFI. has a air idle bypass valve on it that controls the idle..it could be bad
I hope that I'm not mistaken, but you did do a throttlebody fuel injection conversion, right?..I guess your talking about the electronics.. nevermind...my bad....L
