Rastus has disabled reputation
screw them all the way in, then back out two turns. Also check for vacum leaks.

Any advice?

I have a 350 crate motor that I have been running for awhile now. Installed a 670 cfm Holley Truck Avenger on it and had all kinds of problems with adjusting it. It now runs real rich. 14" vac at idle 10" vac in gear timing at 8* runs good except when starting off at a light it boggs down. Any ideas? Anyone around here good with Holleys? Want to put Multi Port Injection but not in the toy budget right now. Any advice would be good...............other then get rid of it!!!!!!!!! LOL

Truck Avenger.

You may have to change the accelerator pump nozzle to stop that bog and or the accelerator pump cam because they both could be the problem, call the Holley techs and they can most likely tell you what to order. I had to change both on mine, it is MUCH better but there are still some issues with mine, mostly because I have a 318 and the carb, according to Holley is just a little too much for any engine below 350 Cu.In. ACProKeith is running one on his 350 so you might ask how he has it set up. I keep hearing and seeing and reading good things about these carbs so that is the only reason I have not given up on mine yet.
To be honest right now I am running my Edelbrock #1406 for safety reasons till I get the TA doing perfect. Hope you get it going.
Also, concerning carb adjustments I was taught to use a vacuum gauge and adjust for highest vacuum and the best most stable idle speed. Both screws should be out the same # of turns from a lightly seated position. Start at maybe 1 turn out and go from there. Hope this helps some. One final thing is a check of the connections at the distributor? Cap, rotor etc??? Also is the distributor running true and not "wobbling" inside indicating a worn out distributor? Just some basics to check for the 1st post trouble.

ok, had the same prob... solution was: alot of tuning, setting the timing at 8-10 deg., and getting the big pack of accelerator pump cams, then switching them until ya get most of it gone.. you fuel bowl must be set right, as that can be a prob with the rear bowl.. also, if you go to the biggest cam and still need more gas, you might want to increase the accelerator pump discharge nozzles.. never go more than 2 sizes at a time.. the carb rocks the freekin mic dude,, its not the carb's fault.. you just have to learn how to tune it.. after you get the accelerator pump set (=no more bogs on acceleration), then move on to setting the main jets.... you must reset the idle mix, and the fuel bowl before you set the main jets.. the instructions for that are in the manual and in the post below... once you get it right you will know it.. it will rev fast and have the response of efi... and ya wont have any hill probs either... i must admit i did not know how to do it before i got mine, but i learned from the best.. a buddy of mine thats been racing cars with holleys for years.. hint: old drag racers can tune a holley with their eyes closed.. get some good plugs too.. and how much power is your crate motor getting to the dirt? is it modified? heads? intake? exhaust? pistons? it always helps to know if your dealing with a 150 horse stock target motor, or a 425 hp crate motor..

Right now it's just the 350/350hp 2002 model Chevrolet crate motor. Not working to it's full potentional right now with the carb like this. Debating or replacing with a 430hp small block or 500hp torque monster 468. UUUMMMMMMMMMMM such a hard choice..........LOL but need to use this one for now.

Thanks for the advice.......I'll try to dig in to it next week.

With the Edelbrock/Carter carb, start with the idle mixture screws turned 1.5-2 turns out. Turn them in one at a time until the engine starts to stumble, then turn out 1/2 turn, then on to the next mixture screw. Like stated before, they need to be out an equal amount of turns. You can use a vacum gauge and reach for the highest reading. If you have a good ear, then you will be able too tune it w/o a gauge and end up at the same setting.

As for the holley, I wish I could help, but I can't stand 'em. IMO they are way too cantankerous for a daily driver, but are great for a racer or off-road only rig. I can tune a Carter/Edelbrock in my sleep, but I guess it helps that I've been working with them since I was in my early teens.

Thank but have a couple of Edelbrocks and can't stand them for anything over a 3ft climb. Need to get this Avenger tuned and I'l be good. When I have time I'll just have to tear into it.
