made it home DELETE

A good friend of mine is broke down in Brownwood Tx. Southwest of Dallas and due West of Waco.He is driving a 2001 dodge turbo diesel. It started blowing white smoke and losing power. He stopped to check it out and someone told him to take the breather off. He did and the problem went away for about 20 minutes and came back. Any suggestions?? Known causes?? He is on the side of the road right now!!!!!!
Please help asap.

no, and I dont think a cracked head would have changed by removing the air cleaner. The temps are right, oil and coolant are good.

Mine did the same thing when I filled it w/ unleaded. Bonehead move, but it happens.

Maybe the turbo took a dump and is letting oil into the combustion chambers.

He runs a 100 gallon extra tank in the truck and he filled up before he left Dallas on the way down there, so I'm sure it is all diesel.

I understand, and I appreciate the info. I am on several boards right now asking the same questions. I didn't mean to sound sharp.

Maybe a cracked/leaking fuel line or leaky injector pump. I know that air in the fuel will cause white smoke.

Usually a turbo leaking oil into the engine will lead to catastrophic failure.

hmm

Sounds like the Turbocharger, I would shut it down till I got a good look at the turbo because as mentioned earlier if it does disentigrate he will have a much bigger problem.

Also, if the turbo is leaking oil and it has an intercooler be sure to flush it out good before restarting the engine. I have a friend that blew up his d-max that way. He overboosted the turbo because his boost gauge was bad, the turbo self destructed and pumped a lot of oil into the intercooler. He replaced the turbo and when he started it it sucked the oil into the engine and just kept running until something let go. It almost happened a second time when his wastegate tube blew off and took out the turbo again. Luckily he was able to choke off the air supply that time and killed it before it did any more damage. He went through all that trouble because of a $.50 hose clamp. lol
