Initial Start Up...71' Blazer...Sitting 3 Years
I will bring my new 71' Blazer home on Saturday. It has set up in a garage for 3 years. This is how I plan to start it for the first time. Any advise is welcome.
1. Drain fuel tank, and add fresh gas. 2. replace all fluids. 3. Pull plugs and add ATF to cylinders. 4. Disconnect fuel line at carb. 5. Crank until fresh fuel is seen without spark plugs installed. 6. Replace plugs and crank it up. 7. If float is stuck, tap on carb to release. Am I miising anything? Thanks Tim

Some stuff i would do,just for a piece of mind.
Check/replace lower radiator hose. These are nearly always spongey and looking for a chance to pop in older rigs. Check Upper hose. Dosnt seem to get as bad,as fast. Belts. There are maby 3 on that rig? Replace them while you are under the hood. Youll feel better driving with new belts. Radiator Cap....rubbers get brittle=no seal Check/replace battery cables. All cheap and quick.

I would suggest straight water in the radiator incase you have leaks. Once everything checks out, drain and replace with antifreeze.

3. Pull plugs and add ATF to cylinders.
Use 2 cycle oil instead. ATF is not designed to burn.

Maybe add straight water like he said and add some radiator cleaner to get rid of all the deposits that water will build up. A good radiator flush never hurts.

Did all the above today. He said he has had starter problem. I replaced starter and cranked without plugs to make sure everything was free. Motor turned over OK but had a starter whine. Like not meshing with flywheel right, but still turned motor OK
![]() Thanks, Tim

Starter/Flywheel Pictures
I don't think the nose on the starter is long enough to allow the bendix to connect with the flywheel. What do you think?
Thanks, Tim ![]() http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/...hotos-_-Sharee

Just had my son hit the key while I watched the starter. Starter gear appears to barley hit the flywheel. Almost like the gear is to small. Sorry ya'll, I must sound like a dumbass. I know enough to get myself in trouble sometimes. And advise and help is always welcome. Thanks, Tim

Do you have the right starter? Are you getting proper voltage to the starter to make it engage 100%?

Starter is engaging all right. I am not sure about the right starter. The parts house looked it up by application and the one they wanted to sell me would not have bolted up. Totally different mounting, it mounted vertical, not horizontal. Even the aluminum option was different than the starter I took in. One of the bolt mounts was to thick.........

I would run the numbers on the back of the motor to find out what year it really is if the starter they looked up was the wrong one. Did this truck sit after motor work or swap? Did they install the fly wheel backwards?
