large oil leak!

Ok, I have a 82 Toyota 22r that is leaking oil or throwing oil out the valve cover by blowing off the hose on top of the valve cover, someone told me rings are shot but this motor is not g at all. EGR valve stuck? Any way to clean it or bypass it? EGR valve is 200.00 at autozone! Any thoughts?

Check to see if your crankcase ventilation is plugged up

Thanks for the reply Ratus, I still need to get those shirts!

I would not even know were the crankcase vent is on this motor. I have a line large line coming from the top of the valve cover, I plan on pulling that off when it's not 100* outside. Thanks again.

pull oil fill cap off, see if you are getting backpressure, or unplug egr to test that, also the pvc valve can stick

Oh, it has backpressure alright. But it does not have a EGR valve its has a block off, so it's either the rings or the PCV Valve which is under the valve cover. I hope?

The pcv valve should be connected to a vacuum source either from the carb/tb or intake. It is usually stuck inside a rubber grommet in the valve cover. It should also have a breather vent, which is probably the line that you are describing. The breather tube is usually connected to the air cleaner.

I'm not familiar with toyotas so I cant help much without actually seeing it.

Another Angle

Asked my friend about this(knows the 22R well), He said that you might want to check your valves. When the valve train starts getting old that the valve will not set allowing pressure to blow out the valve seals and pressurizing the valve cover thus causing oil to leak from the cover. This might also help with the remark about those bad rings. The bleed down on the pressure check is because a non-seating valves and not worn rings. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help, I'm going to try the pcv valve first since it's cheap and easy to get to, if that does not work then a valve job. THANKS again for the help.
